WDWNT’s Top 7 Things Coming to Disney Parks in 2019

Well, it’s finally here: 2019. It’s the year in which Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge opens on both coasts. 2019 didn’t need any more than that to be important for the Disney Parks, but there’s a modest lineup of offerings on the way to the parks to accompany the game-changer that is the 14-acre planet of Batuu.

Mickey and Minnie’s Surprise Celebration

Mickey & Minnie’s Surprise Celebration will honor Mickey and Minnie Mouse, with new entertainment, merchandise and specialty food and beverages at the Magic Kingdom.

Mickey and Minnie will greet guests together inside Town Square Theater, wearing all-new, colorful outfits for their special celebration. At Celebration Station inside Town Square Theater, guests may sign a guestbook to let Mickey and Minnie know, personally, how much fun they had during the party. An all-new song, “It’s a Good Time,” will play several times daily as part of the new “Move It! Shake It! MousekeDance It! Street Party.” During this high-energy bash, singing hosts will invite guests to join in the fun with Disney pals including Donald Duck, Daisy Duck, Goofy, and many others. Lastly, Mickey’s beloved dog, Pluto, will meet guests under the big top at Pete’s Silly Sideshow in Storybook Circus, taking Minnie’s place.

Disney Skyliner

Even though it isn’t air-conditioned, the world is still excited for the first new mode of mass transportation to debut in decades.

When it opens next fall, the Skyliner will connect Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Epcot to four resort hotels: Disney’s Art of Animation Resort, Disney’s Pop Century Resort and Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort as well as the  15th Disney Vacation Club property, Disney’s Riviera Resort.

Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway

Color us “cautiously optimistic” about this one…

While we are devastated by the loss of The Great Movie Ride, Imagineer Kevin Rafferty who is heading up the project has a slew of fantastic animation-based attractions under his belt. With an original song, some cute audio-animatronics, trackless runaway train cars, and entirely new kind of projection technology involved, this could be one of the greatest Disney theme park attractions ever built. We’ll have to wait until the fall to find out.

Disney’s Hollywood Studios 30th Anniversary

May 1st, 2019, marks the 30th anniversary of Disney’s Hollywood Studios. The park will celebrate this milestone all year long, starting January 18 with start using the new 30th anniversary logo seen above.

Besides any official offerings from Disney, WDWNT.com will be throwing its own shindig to mark the occasion with “Stage 89: An Unofficial Celebration of Walt Disney World in 1989”. Registration for this event opens soon at Stage89.com.

Lightning McQueen’s Racing Academy

Sunset Showcase at Disney’s Hollywood Studios reopens in 2019 as home to Lightning McQueen’s Racing Academy.

To kick things off, Lightning demonstrates what he’s learned over the years by using his brand-new, state-of-the-art racing simulator and its wraparound screen. Of course, as this seasoned racer has discovered throughout his career, things don’t always go according to plan, and he has to think fast to get back on course. With Tow Mater, Cruz Ramirez and the gang from Radiator Springs rooting him on, Lightning gears up for the challenge. Will he emerge victorious? Speed on over to find out. Bonus: after the show, you’ll even have the chance to snap a photo with trainer-turned-racer Cruz Ramirez just outside the Academy.

The Rest of PIXAR Pier

While Pixar Pier opened in 2018, 2019 will see the addition of Jessie’s Critter Carousel and the Inside Out Emotional Whirlwind.

Neither attraction is completely new: the Critter Carousel was formerly King Triton’s Carousel of the Sea, and the Emotional Whirlwind was Flik’s Flyers from the now-closed “A Bug’s Land” at California Adventure.

Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge

I don’t know what even needs to be said about this one.

Disneyland Art, Opera House

The most anticipated theme park addition in history will open Summer 2019 at Disneyland Park and Fall 2019 at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, bringing what we are all expecting to be cataclysmic-level crowds. It will no doubt be amazing, but all of the doubt seems to lie with how one will get to experience it without waiting hours and hours just to enter. The answers will be upon us in a matter of months.

As you can see, 2019 has a lot to offer other than just the biggest theme park land of all time.

  1. Of course, Galaxy’s Edge is a biggie, but I am equally fascinated by how the SkyLiner will change things at WDW.

For me, the best of Disney always has something to do with Place, and movement from Place to Place. I know that is vague, but I don’t know how else to say it. Throughout the Parks, paths and modes of transportation cross over, around, and through each other — interacting and interweaving. To me, the energy and anticipation of all those views is exhilarating.

So, how will the SkyLiner feel? How intrusive will it be visually? How will it flow through the day, especially at park closings? Will it eventually expand east to Typhoon/Springs — or west to Coronado/Blizzard/Animal Kingdom?

    I love it! Can’t wait!

    • On our last trip we drove around areas that they was actively working on Skyliner cable installation. It’s honestly not that intrusive. From the parks you won’t notice it except maybe towards France at Epcot but that’s not too bad either. Looking towards the World Showcase you don’t see it, and looking head on at France you don’t either, but I believe it’ll be visible when the new area opens for Ratatouille, but they might also put up something to help hide it too.

I think the resorts most affected by visibility is Pop/AOA just because it’s placed right in the center of both. As for expansion, it could be something they consider in the future if it’s a success. It would definitely be something I would like to see, especially as dedicated Pop guests lol.

      • It will be very intrusive at the Caribbean Beach as it travels directly over some rooms. I also do not know how double strollers and ECVs will fit into the cars or travel into them unless it slows down to a near stop, but I believe they have reported it won’t actually stop to let people in, like a ski lift.
It still remains to be seen, but I can see getting “stuck” on it frequently as people have difficulty embarking/disembarking.

  2. being in bizz myself you fix what is broken ( monorail ) first ! before you get sued . and before you commit to a project like the skylinner or for that matter any other project that consumes millions , billions of $$$$$ . but that’s just me. several people I have talked to have stated that they will not ride the skylinner . ac , scared, lightning , fear of heights ect. we will see.

  3. Just wanted to say I’ve really been enjoying the top and bottom seven lists you’ve put out in the last week. Thanks for your thoughtful articles!
