Two new names have been added to the cast list for Disney’s upcoming sequel film, “TRON: Ares,” also known as “Tron 3,” both according to Deadline.
Cameron Monaghan, most recently the star of the video game “Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order” and Sarah Desjardins, star of “Yellowjackets,” have both joined the cast ahead of the possible SAG-AFTRA strike. They join Jared Leto, who has been attached to the project for some time, and Evan Peters, whose casting was announced last month.
Monaghan is likely best known for his turn as Ian Gallagher in Showtime’s series “Shameless,” which ran for a total of 11 seasons from 2011 to 2021. He also notably played the Joker-esque twins Jerome and Jeremiah Valeska on Fox’s live-action Batman-adjacent series, “Gotham.” His role as Cal Kestis in the Star Wars video games is his most recent credit.
Desjardins currently stars in Showtime’s “Yellowjackets” as Callie Sadecki, the teenage daughter of Melanie Lynskey’s character, Shauna. Per Deadline, the series received an Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Drama Series earlier today. Desjardin can also be found in CW’s “Riverdale,” Hulu’s “Under the Banner of Heaven,” and Netflix’s “The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina the Teenage Witch.”
Details about both actors’ characters are unknown at this time, though the film is reportedly eyeing an August production start should the strike not last that long.
‘TRON: Ares,’ Also Known As ‘TRON 3’
The first “TRON” film was released in 1982, followed by “TRON: Legacy” in 2010. News first circulated in 2017 that Jared Leto would star in a “TRON” reboot. It has since been described as a sequel instead of a reboot, with development moving forward in 2020.
“TRON 3” will reportedly be set more in the real world than the previous two and will “focus on the emergence of a sentient program that crosses over into the human world that is not ready for contact.” Leto — who will also appear in Disney’s upcoming “Haunted Mansion” film — will play the sentient program, a.k.a. Ares.
“TRON 3” is written by Jesse Wigutow and Jack Thorne. Joachim Rønning will direct. Rønning previously directed Disney’s “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” and co-directed “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” with Espen Sandberg.
Russell Allen is executive producing. Leto, Emma Ludbrook, Jeffrey Silver, and Justin Springer are producing.
TRON Lightcycle / Run
TRON Lightcycle Run is a high-speed roller coaster experience in the Tomorrowland area of Magic Kingdom with sudden acceleration, sharp turns, drops, and a style of seating and restraints reminiscent of a motorcycle or bicycle. It is a replica of the original version that debuted at Shanghai Disneyland as an opening day attraction in 2016.
The queue, canopy area, and attraction itself all take inspiration from the 1982 film “TRON” and its 2010 sequel, “TRON Legacy.” The original played a pivotal role in the history and development of computer animation in movies. Virtual Queue is free and dispensed twice each day — once at 7 a.m. (which you can book remotely with a valid park reservation through the My Disney Experience app) and again at 1 p.m. (all guests must be physically in the park at this time). Guests are placed in boarding groups, and updated throughout the day on which groups are being called.
