For regular guests and frequent visitors alike, there is nothing worse than heading down to the Walt Disney WorldResort only to find your favorite attraction or restaurant is closed for refurbishment. For those unfamiliar with the term, a refurbishment is when something is closed for an extended period of time for extensive repairs or remodeling. As always, everything at the resort is subject to a “refurb”, including the water parks, hotels, transportation system, etc.

Probably the two most widely known refurbishments taking place or about to take place are that of Space Mountain in Tomorrowland and the expansion of Fantasyland. There are many more “refurbs” about to begin than just these major projects, so we’re going to try and break it down for you that will not only make your next visit to Walt Disney World pleasant and surprise-free. To make it simple to find what is and isn’t open, we’re going to break this down by months: November, December, and January.

Also keep in mind that although these refurbishments are planned and scheduled, they are all subject to change without notice. It’s always best to check before you travel to Walt Disney World or check with Guest Relations at the parks or hotels for the most current information.

NOVEMBER 2009
If you are heading to the Walt Disney World resort in November you should expect to find the following disruptions in the four theme parks:

THE MAGIC KINGDOM
SPACE MOUNTAIN – SCHEDULED TO REPOPEN SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 21, 2009
Over in Tomorrowland, Space Mountain is still closed and is scheduled to reopen on Saturday, November 21, 2009. During its seven-month closing the Company has confirmed that Space Mountain will be retaining many of the elements that has made Space Mountain what it is and known for, but has confirmed that there will be newly installed track (the layout will remain the same), an upgraded queue area (possibly with interactive features), and a new ceiling for the dome’s shell. Also rumored is that the boarding area is now enclosed and that there may be an on-ride photo feature.

TOMORROWLAND LIGHT & POWER CO. (ARCADE) – SCHEDULED TO REOPEN SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 21, 2009
Attached to Space Mountain is the Tomorrowland Light & Power Co., which is actually a high-tech arcade. It, as Space Mountain, closed in April and will also re-open on Saturday, November 21, 2009. Rumors indicate the addition of a on-ride photo purchase area.

MAD TEA PARTY – CLOSING NOVEMBER 3 – 5, 2009
Although there are no details as to the refurbishment of the Mad Tea Party spinning tea cups, given the short closure time, the work sounds very minimal.

DISNEY’S HOLLYWOOD STUDIOS
SOUNDS DANGEROUS – SCHEDULED TO REOPEN ON JANUARY 1, 2010
There are also not many details surrounding what is going on inside this attraction at press time, with the exception that in early 2009 it was announced that this attraction would operate seasonally and that the scheduled re-opening would be January 1, 2010. In the meantime, the image of Drew Carrey along with the attraction’s name has been removed from the top of the entrance and the outdoor screens have been turned off. It is also reported, although unconfirmed, that Sounds Dangerous will be replaced with an attraction based on Disney Channels’ “Phineas and Ferb”.

EPCOT
Everything looks as if it will be fully operational throughout November. Epcot’s Holiday’s Around The World Celebration and Candlelight Processional will begin on November 27.

ANIMAL KINGDOM
Currently there are no scheduled refurbishments or rehabs planned for the park.

THE WALT DISNEY WORLD RESORTS
POP CENTURY RESORT- THE COMPUTER POOL – SCHEDULED TO REOPEN NOVEMBER 6, 2009
The Computer Pool, which is a “quiet pool” and located near the 1990’s building, is currently under refurbishment and will reopen on November 6. If you are staying at the Pop Century Resort and wish to utilize the resort’s swimming pools the Hippy Dippy Pool (near the 1960’s building) and the Bowling Pool (near the 1950’s building) will be available, however…

POP CENTURY RESORT- THE BOWLING POOL – SCHEDULED TO CLOSE ON NOVEMBER 9-20, 2009

PORT ORLEANS RESORT – RIVERSIDE – THE POOL SLIDE AT OL’ MAN ISLAND WILL REOPEN ON NOVEMBER 6, 2009
There are a number of minor refurbishments going on at the Port Orleans Resort – that not big in scope, but still may be a bit of a bother.
For those who will have a car at the resort you should know that from November 2-13 the parking lot at the Oak Manor will be undergoing pavement milling and an overlay and then on November 16-27, the parking lot at Alligator Bayou (building 24) will also undergo a pavement milling and overlay.

PORT ORLEANS RESORT – FRENCH QUARTER – POOL SLIDE AT DOUBLOON POOL WILL CLOSE NOVEMBER 9-20, 2009
Like clockwork, the slide on the French Quarter side will close three days after the Riverside slide reopens. Subsequently guests may use the pool still or head over to the Riverside and use the pool and slide at Ol’ Man Island.
Although it probably won’t cause much in the way of guest inconvenience, but guests should know that from November 9 through January 22, 2010, the exterior of the French Quarter side will undergo exterior repairs and painting.

The other construction project that you will notice (and probably be a little affected by) is that the tile floor in the main building is being replaced.
