call me crazy, but once you take the head off a vinyl, is it ruined or do they just pop right back on?

The heads pop off and on fairly easy, so do the arms on the 3". The only issue you may have is the heads will be a little looser on the Vinyl body when you put it back on. This really is not an issue for me as the Vinyls are just sitting on a shelf.
