“Avatar” and All Four “Avengers” Movies Are Being Re-Released in Chinese Theaters

With China reporting that they have contained the Coronavirus in their country, people are slowly trying to get back to everyday life. China recently lifted travel restrictions for 60 million residents of the province of Hubei. Now, it has been reported that an estimated 600-700 cinemas have reopened across the country.

No large cinema chains have opened yet, however, and the ones that are participating are smaller theaters located outside the regions that reported heavy Coronavirus activity.

Several major studios are re-releasing their titles to those theaters that have reopened. Disney is doing its share by re-releasing “Avatar” and all four “Avengers” movies. Marvel’s “Avengers”, “Avengers: Age of Ultron”, “Avengers: Infinity War”, and “Avengers: Endgame” will re-release in select theaters beginning this Thursday. There is no word yet as to when “Avatar” will be re-released, but it could share the same date as the “Avengers” movies, or follow shortly after that.

Other movies from the United States that will also be re-released in China are “Inception”, “Interstellar”, “Green Book”, “A Dog’s Purpose” and “A Dog’s Journey”.

1. I find it nearly impossible that they’ve “contained” the virus this early on. Something’s a little suspicious about China’s response to this.
2. It’s just going to spread more and reenter the country one way or another. We’re still in the very early stages of the pandemic.

If this re-release becomes fairly widespread, we could have an interesting and unplanned head-to-head battle for the all-time box office title, since Avatar and Endgame were very close when the final numbers for Endgame came in last year.
