What if everyone had magical powers… except you? That’s the idea behind Encanto, a new film reportedly in production at Walt Disney Animation Studios.

The DisInsider reported details about the film on Wednesday. Details were scant about the plot, but supposedly the film will be set in Brazil and will be about a family who all has magical powers… except for one young girl. Encanto, translated from Portuguese, means “charm.”

The film will reportedly be directed by Zootopia‘s Byron Howard and Jared Bush and produced by Clark Spencer (Ralph Breaks the Internet) and Yvett Merino Flores (Moana, Big Hero 6). The screenplay comes from Bush and Charise Castro Smith (“The Haunting of Hill House”), with music by superstar Lin-Manuel Miranda (Moana, Mary Poppins Returns).

Currently, WDAS has a scheduled release date for an unannounced film on November 24th, 2021. It’s currently unknown if Encanto will take that spot. If it does, it would be the third time in five years that the studio has featured a young woman of color as their main protagonist, following Moana in 2016 and Raya and the Last Dragon, set to release next March.

Will Disney Animation work its magic once again on Encanto? Let us know in the comments!

  1. It would be nice if they had brazilians on the team. The risk of stereotype is too high. Brazil is a multicultural country, with huge differences among its regions. It would be a shame to see another Rio-amazon-carnival-soccer based movie
