Coalition of Resort Labor Unions Pens Letter to Governor Newsom Asking to Reopen Disneyland

The Coalition of Resort Labor Unions has reached out directly to Governor Gavin Newsom regarding the reopening of Disneyland Resort.

In their communication, they thank him for his leadership on the COVID-19 crisis. While the coalition was not convinced that it was safe to reopen the parks on Disney’s timetable back in June 2020, since then their stance has changed and given the increased health and safety measures in place for Cast Members, plus a COVID-19 testing program, they support Disneyland Resort opening once the county moves into the “Orange” tier.

In consideration of all the aforementioned we believe a path exists where Disneyland would be able to open safely when Orange County moves in to the Orange tier.

Following up, the union coalition asked to meet with Gov. Newsom’s task force in order to collaborate on the best practices for on-site workers.

Last week, Disneyland reached return to work agreements with 11 Cast Member unions, making the reopening of Disneyland Resort resorts and theme parks possible as soon as government guidelines are issued. As of the latest COVID-19 update, Orange County is still under the “Red” tier. Governor Newsom recently stated that California was in “no hurry” to issue theme park reopening dates or guidelines, stating science will guide any announcements on when and how it will be safe to reopen major theme parks.
