GUIDE: How to Use Disney Genie+ & Lightning Lane, Paid Replacement to FastPass at Walt Disney World

Disney Genie+ and Lightning Lane are the paid programs replacing FastPass+. They made their debut at Walt Disney World Resort on October 19, 2021. This is our guide to the Walt Disney World service. Read our separate guide for information about Disney Genie+ at Disneyland Resort.

This guide is accurate as of January 20, 2024.

What is Disney Genie+?

Disney Genie+ is an add-on product to the complimentary Disney Genie feature. It can be accessed via the My Disney Experience mobile app, which is a complimentary app for smartphones.

Purchasing Disney Genie+ gives you access to Audio Tales, Disney PhotoPass AR Lenses, and Lightning Lane at select attractions.

The Cost

Disney Genie+ was originally a flat rate of $15 per ticket, per park, per day. In October 2022, Walt Disney World introduced date-based variable pricing. In June 2023, they introduced park-specific variable pricing.

Guests can purchase Disney Genie+ for a specific park or can purchase a “multiple parks” option. Magic Kingdom and the multiple parks option are always the same price and the most expensive. Disney’s Hollywood Studios is the second most expensive, followed by EPCOT, and then Disney’s Animal Kingdom.

$15 is still the all-time low for Genie+ (for Disney’s Animal Kingdom) although is rarely seen. The current record high, first reached on December 23, 2023, is $39 for Magic Kingdom or multiple parks. At that high, Genie+ is $35 for Disney’s Hollywood Studios, $32 for EPCOT, and $29 for Disney’s Animal Kingdom.

How To Purchase Disney Genie+

You can purchase Genie+ on the day of your visit.

To add Disney Genie+ services on the same day as your visit, you’ll want to navigate to the Disney Genie section of your My Disney Experience app. You’ll either see the above pop-up, or there will be the option to purchase at the top of the page.

Genie+ was originally also available as an add-on to a vacation package when pre-purchasing before a visit. That option has been discontinued and it can now only be purchased on the day of your visit.

Genie+ does sometimes sell out, usually during the busy holiday season. When one park sells out, the multiple parks option will become unavailable.

Wondering why some of your favorite rides aren’t on the list? The two most popular rides at each park are not included in Genie+ Lightning Lane. Instead, you will need to purchase Individual Lightning Lane separately for these attractions. For more information, check out our full guide to Individual Lightning Lane selections.

How To Use Lightning Lane

Once you have purchased Disney Genie+, you will be able to book experiences in the My Disney Experience app as early as 7:00 a.m. on the day of your visit. This is one of the biggest differences between Lightning Lane and FastPass+ (other than the price tag). Lightning Lane cannot be booked before the day of your visit, and only one experience may be booked at a time.

Disney Genie Tip Board

There is a toggle filter within My Disney Experience to only show attractions with Lightning Lane through Genie+.

On the Tip Board, attractions’ standby waits and Lightning Lane return times are listed. Click the Lightning Lane box to book that experience. You are given a one-hour return timeframe that cannot be altered. After booking a Lightning Lane, you can view it in your plans under My Day.

My Day also shows recommendations and you can check Lightning Lane availability through that tab.

genie plus modify lightning lane 8449

To modify a Lightning Lane selection, click the three buttons next to the details under My Day. You can then select a new experience. This allows you to change attractions, not the time you visit the pre-selected attraction.

Once you have redeemed your Lightning Lane access, your redemption window has expired, or 120 minutes have passed since booking (or 120 minutes have passed since the park opened if you booked before then), you will be able to book another experience, a.k.a. “stacking” Lightning Lanes.

You can hold two Lightning Lanes with overlapping time windows but not the exact same window. There is no limit on the number of experiences you may book each day. However, Lightning Lane can only be used once per attraction per day.

Lightning Lane may be booked at more than one park per day if your ticket has Park Hopping abilities. With full-day Park Hopping back, you can book Lightning Lane experiences across parks at any time.

Audio Tales

Audio Tales are short informational programs around the parks. Inspired by the Imagineering Field Guides, these clips will give you trivia and information about different areas around the parks.

Disney PhotoPass AR Lenses

Disney PhotoPass AR Lenses allow you to use special filters on your device’s camera to enhance your photos.

genie-how-to-4-2059217

These lenses can only be accessed once you’ve entered the park. Some of them, like the Cinderella Castle 1971 filter, can only be used when you are in specific areas of the park.
