According to director James Cameron, “Avatar: Fire and Ash” will be longer than its predecessors, “Avatar” and “Avatar: The Way of Water,” due to having “too many great ideas.”

Per Empire, Cameron originally planned for the original “Avatar” film to have three sequels. However, when the writers got into developing the story for the second film, there was just “too much juicy material.” He had this to say about their meeting:

In a nutshell, we had too many great ideas packed into act one of movie 2. The [film] was moving like a bullet train, and we weren’t drilling down enough on character. So I said, ‘Guys, we’ve got to split it.’ […] movie 3 will actually be a little bit longer than movie 2.

The original film had a run time of 2 hours and 42 minutes while “Avatar: The Way of Water” ran 3 hours and 12 minutes. The official run time of the third installment has not been announced.

Amanda Silver, one of the film’s screenwriters alongside Rick Jaffa, told Empire that the “characters needed to breathe.” By splitting the original plot for the sequel into two films, they are “allowing enough time to bring all those nuances to the screen.”

Concept art alongside the title of the third film was released at D23 this past August. The upcoming film, “Avatar: Fire and Ash,” will see the next chapter of the Sully story take Jake and Neytiri’s family into unexplored territory, where they’ll encounter a new group of Na’vi with their own unique connection to the land. The film is set to be released theatrically on December 19, 2025.
