“Mufasa,” the prequel to the dubbed live-action “The Lion King” film, will be arriving on Disney+ by the end of March 2025 according to a new article from The Wrap. The Wrap says the announcement was initially made by Dana Walden, co-chairman of Disney Entertainment, during the the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media, and Telecom Conference.

Disney’s release schedule for films on Disney+ is usually between three and four months after their theatrical release. Since “Mufasa” was released in theaters on December 20, 2024, an end-of-March date is within their usual window. However, the film is arriving earlier than “Moana 2,” which premiered on November 27 but will not arrive on Disney+ until March 12. No exact date for the release of “Mufasa” has been announced yet.

The film tells the story of a young Mufasa as he is separated from his parents and is adopted by the family of Taka, a.k.a. Scar. The brothers journey together to return to Mufasa’s homeland, meeting characters like Sarabi along the way. Aaron Pierre stars as Mufasa and Kelvin Harrison Jr. stars as Taka. The film also includes several actors reprising their roles from the 2019 “The Lion King.”

“Mufasa” opened to a rocky start, with some critics dubbing the film a box office flop for Disney as it was overtaken by the release of “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” during its premiere week. Despite these initial fears, “Mufasa” has gone on to become a box office success and recently crossed over a global box office gross of $700 million. Disney has also released the “The Lion King at the Hollywood Bowl” live event recording on Disney+ to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the original Lion King animated film.
