Walt Disney World filed another permit in preparation for the demolition of Star Wars Launch Bay and the construction of The Magic of Disney Animation at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
The Magic of Disney Animation Construction Permit
The Notice of Commencement is for Buena Vista Construction Company to “Provide labor, material and/or electrical for construction” at 190 Showbiz Blvd. Although the address has been home to Star Wars Launch Bay for 10 years, it is actually still listed as The Magic of Disney Animation on the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District address finder.
This is the third permit, following two filed for the courtyard’s entrance archway and a popcorn kiosk. The archway will be demolished as part of the updates to Animation Courtyard.
All of the permits contract Buena Vista Construction Company, which usually handles smaller projects. They may be preparing the area ahead of actual demolition and construction.
Updated Animation Courtyard
The Magic of Disney Animation was an opening-day attraction at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. It’s returning in a new form with a reimagined Animation Courtyard dubbed The Walt Disney Studios, inspired by Disney’s real studio spaces in Burbank, California.
The Magic of Disney Animation originally centered around Disney’s actual Florida film studio attached to Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Guests could see into the Disney Feature Animation building, where films like Lilo & Stitch were created. The studio closed in 2004, but the attraction remained open until 2015.
The new version of the experience will take inspiration from the Once Upon a Studio short film and be a “place where kids and kids at heart can laugh, draw, dream, and explore animated new experiences.” Guests will “interact with and explore silly takes on the iconic Disney Animation headquarters, including the many different studio departments. Only this time, some of our favorite pals have taken over to create the fun adventures.”
There will be an indoor playground inspired by Mary Blair’s Alice in Wonderland concept art. The building will have a Mickey’s Sorcerer Hat facade, just like the real Roy E. Disney Animation Building in Burbank. Next door will be a new Disney Jr. show.
