Netflix removed the entire Harry Potter film series, including Fantastic Beasts from its service in the UK and Ireland on January 1, 2026, due to expiring streaming licenses. This is likely to consolidate content for the upcoming HBO Max/Max streaming service launch in those regions.

Grossing over $7.7 billion worldwide and being one of the highest-grossing film series of all time, the Harry Potter film franchise adapted J.K. Rowling’s seven novels into eight films released between 2001 and 2011. The films star Daniel Radcliffe as Harry Potter, Emma Watson as Hermione Granger, and Rupert Grint as Ron Weasley. Centered around Harry’s journey into the world of wizardry and his continuing conflict with Voldemort, the films were directed by a series of filmmakers over the years: Chris Columbus, Alfonso Cuarón, Mike Newell, and David Yates.

Netflix Acquiring Warner Bros. and HBO

In December, Netflix announced that it would acquire Warner Bros., including its film and television studios, HBO, and HBO Max. The acquisition is not yet completed; it is still pending regulatory and shareholder approvals. Warner Bros. Discovery went on sale on November 20, leading to a frenzy of bidding that Netflix ultimately won. The transition from one streaming service to another is part of the merger.

“Our mission has always been to entertain the world,” said Ted Sarandos, co-CEO of Netflix. “By combining Warner Bros.’ incredible library of shows and movies—from timeless classics like Casablanca and Citizen Kane to modern favorites like Harry Potter and Friends—with our culture-defining titles like Stranger ThingsKPop Demon Hunters and Squid Game, we’ll be able to do that even better. Together, we can give audiences more of what they love and help define the next century of storytelling.”

In the U.S., Harry Potter films are currently available on Max, and in many cases also on Peacock — depending on the individual movie. They are also available for rent/purchase on Amazon.

Production is also underway for HBO’s new Harry Potter television series, starring Dominic McLaughlin as Potter.

HBO has confirmed that the show will debut in 2027 on HBO and HBO Max. It will be a decade-long, seven-season “faithful” adaptation of the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling.

Francesca Gardiner serves as showrunner, writer, and executive producer, with Mark Mylod as executive producer and director of multiple episodes. Rowling will also serve as executive producer.
