As exciting as it is to hear about new projects on Disney+ like The Mandalorian or the Lady and the Tramp remake, die-hard Disney fans like myself have been hoping to hear about how much of Disney’s vast back catalog of films and television programs would be on the new streaming service. And on Thursday at The Walt Disney Company’s annual shareholders’ meeting, CEO Bob Iger gave fans the news they had been hoping for: eventually, Disney+ will be home to the entire library of the studio’s films.
This is a major change from the company’s previous policy, where many of its animated classics would be released on home video for a limited time before they were put back in the “Disney Vault,” to be released again after a several-year moratorium. But with the streaming and on-demand markets bringing movies to anybody whenever they want it, the idea of holding something back just to release it again seemed somewhat archaic. It’s also good news for fans looking to explore the more obscure live-action movies in Disney’s history, which have occasionally been restricted to releases to members of the Disney Movie Club.
We don’t know if the “Disney Vault” system will still apply to physical media releases like Blu-Ray and DVD, or what Disney plans to include from its library of television programs, but this is certainly exciting news for fans who want to explore Disney’s long legacy of film.
