Disney and Jam City Announce Multi-Year Mobile Games Partnership

Mobile games giant Jam City announced today a multi-year partnership with Disney that includes the development of new games along with taking over popular mobile game Disney Emoji Blitz.

As part of the deal Jam City will now have development rights to create new mobile games based on Disney and Pixar characters. In fact, Jam City already has a game in the works based on the upcoming sequel to Frozen. To help continue the growth of Disney Emoji Blitz, team members from Disney’s Glendale Games Studio will move over to Jam City.

Chris DeWolfe, co-founder and CEO of Jam City said the following in regards to the announcement, “Jam City is proud to be teaming with Disney. Disney is the world’s leader in beloved characters and brands that have engaged generations of fans for decades. Jam City’s leadership in mobile entertainment based on iconic entertainment IP, makes our company an ideal partner to develop a lineup of new mobile games with Disney’s most popular franchises.”

This move is the latest in Disney’s continued efforts to get out of in-house game development and publishing. Beginning in 2016 when Disney cancelled Disney Infinity, the trend has continued over the years. Most recently, Disney announced that the recent successor to the long-running online game Club Penguin would be closing down by the end of the year.

Kyle Laughlin, Senior Vice President of Games and Interactive Experiences at Disney added, “this deal with Jam City represents a significant long-term opportunity for our games business and for the future slate of Disney and Pixar games.”
