Ahead of Valentine’s Day this Thursday, Disney’s Contemporary Resort put together a new “Villaintine’s Day” event today, February 13.
The hotel put together a gorgeous cake display in the main lobby to advertise the special event, but we had to come for the good stuff: the specialty villain themed treats at Contempo Café.
Villaintine’s Day 2019 at Disney’s Contemporary Resort
Gaston Cupcake – $5.99
We’ll start with the best because you deserve the best. No one cupcakes like Gaston, apparently.
This cupcake features an orange cream filling and cake, red dyed frosting, and a tootsie roll belt. It was fantastic.
Hades Cupcake – $5.49
This cupcake will have you considering a trip to the underworld. A sparkly blue cupcake with blue frosting flames and a white chocolate Hades piece pays tribute to the god of the underworld.
We believe this cake to be strawberry flavored (they totally could’ve opted for something more nut-Meg, though.) It has strawberry pearls and purple sprinkles inside, which is much cuter than being filled with the souls of the dead.
Cruella de Vil Cupcake – $5.99
The Cruella de Vil cupcake features red buttercream with a fine coat of white buttercream on top. Thankfully, no puppies were harmed in the making of this cupcake… but this is Villaintine’s, after all.
The interior of the cupcake features a cookies and cream filling tucked away inside of yellow cake. While enjoyable, the allusion to mashed up puppies weighs on our conscience.
Just kidding, it’s delicious. It isn’t an overpowering cookies and cream taste and tastes great with the other components. Puppies be damned!
Lotso Bear Strawberry Scented Brownie – $4.29
We knew we couldn’t trust this cupcake. Just something about how nice and pink it was… and it smelled like strawberries.
There was this cloying, artificial flavor coming from the frosting. The strawberry pearls were the only things adding real strawberry flavor and the brownie was just okay, making this overall the weakest of the villainous bunch.
Captain Hook Cake – $5.99
This was a creative attempt with Captain Hook floating atop a chocolate wood plank in a sea of buttercream waves, getting attacked by Swedish Fish.
This was a dark chocolate cake and far better than the Lotso brownie.
While there was a lot going on here with the cake, frosting, and gummies, it was really good in that worms and dirt kinda way.
Halfway through our review, the Contempo Cafe actually brought out an entire new set of Villain pastries, fresh from the bakery. Since we’re gluttons for punishment (and just plain gluttons) we decided we’d review these too, and complete the set.
Dr. Facilier Cookie Sandwich – $3.99
The cards, the cards, the cards will tell! The past, the present, and the cookies, as well.
This Dr. Facilier cookie has sparkly sugar on top, with a chocolate piece of his hat as well.
Overall, though, this was just a chocolate chip cookie sandwich with chocolate chip cream inside. Good, but we’ve tasted better on the other side.
Evil Queen Fruit Tart – $4.79
This tart really is the fairest in the land.
We appreciated the fresh berries on top of the tart. Only blackberries and blueberries, of course.
The crust was actually delicious, with an even more amazing custard inside. We’d definitely bring Snow White’s heart in a box for this one.
Ursula Cake – $5.29
While nicely designed with glossy purple ganache, black sprinkles, and a gold shell on top, this was basically the same mini confetti cake that’s usually available at Contempo Cafe.
Maleficent Flourless Cake – $4.69
The Maleficent flourless cake looked like a stunner, but overall it was too much of the same texture.
It was actually just fudge and cake on the inside.
While not bad tasting, the overall mouthfeel felt gelatinous after a while.
Scar Peanut Butter Pie – $4.79
The Scar Peanut Butter Pie is the usual peanut butter confection that’s available here, but with a Scar overlay.
Jeremy Irons would be proud.
It’s intensely rich with all the peanut butter, chocolate sprinkles, and frosting going on, but it’s incredible.
Be prepared for this one.
Also as part of Villaintine’s Day 2019, Outer Rim has a selection of themed cocktails available:
