Disney reached an auspicious milestone this week and became the first movie studio to ever have five movies released in one year to each make over $1 billion at the worldwide box office.
With “Toy Story 4” being the latest movie to cross the billion dollar mark, Disney has accumulated nearly $8 billion at the box office.
Here is a list of all of the Disney movies that have made over a billion dollar so far this year.
-
- “Avengers: Endgame” $2,795,695,939
- “The Lion King” $1,435,207,985
- “Captain Marvel” $1,128,274,794
- “Aladdin” $1,035,745,430
- “Toy Story 4” $1,016,639,307
And, Disney is not done yet. “Frozen 2” opens on November 22nd and “Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker” opens on December 20th, and those movies are also expected to join the billion dollar club.
This weekend at the box office, “The Lion King” still had a strong presence by coming in 3rd place at the box office. “The Lion King” brought in $11.9 million at the domestic box office, along with and additional $33.8 million overseas, bringing its worldwide box office total to $1.435 billion. “The Lion King” is doing especially well overseas and has accumulated $939 million, which accounts for over 65% of its worldwide box office take.
Coming in at 10th place was Fox’s “The Art Of Racing In The Rain”. This is the film’s second weekend at the box office and made $4.4 million this weekend domestically, bringing its global box office amount to $18 million. Although it is off to a disappointing start, it still has only opened in less than a fourth of international markets. It will continue to be released throughout the year internationally as far out as December.
Coming in at 12th place was “Spider-Man: Far From Home”. “Spider-Man: Far From Home” made $2.755 million domestically, bringing its worldwide total to $1.103 billion. Next week, “Spider-Man: Far From Home” will become Sony’s highest grossing movie of all time. Previously, that record was held by “Skyfall”, which had a box office total of $1.109 billion. Although not a Disney property, the success of this movie helps Sony’s relationship with Marvel, which will help Spider-Man remain as part of the MCU.
“Toy Story 4” came in 14th place this weekend, bringing in $2,177 million domestically and has a worldwide box office total of $1.017 billion.
“Aladdin” is winding down its box office run and dropped to 19th place this weekend. It made $323 million domestically and has made $1.036 billion at the worldwide box office. Similar to “The Lion King”, “Aladdin” has made over 65% of its box office take from international markets. With the financial success of “Aladdin” it appears that a sequel may be in the works.
Finally, “Avengers: Endgame” came in 25th place. Even though “Endgame” is available for home purchase now, there are still some theaters that are carrying it. As of this weekend, and 17 weeks in theaters, “Avengers: Endgame” has made $2.796 billon at the worldwide box office.
