Bring on the joy! Bring on the cheer! But do NOT bring on the Cheesy “Corn” Dog and Cheesy “Corn” Fries from Award Wieners in Hollywood Land at Disney California Adventure Park. Fortunately, a favorite of ours, the gingerbread funnel cake fries are back this year. These items are available from November 8th, 2019, to January 6th, 2020, if you dare try.
Award Wieners did not have too much of a wait today.
Here’s a look at the Award Wieners holiday menu.
We ordered and within two minutes, our food was ready.
Cheesy “Corn” Dog (Cheddar sausage, tangy corn-cheese sauce, chile-lime-dusted corn fritters, pickled Fresno Chiles and cilantro on a toasted potato bun) – $10.29
At first glance, it looks pretty engrossing. The description of the dog makes it sounds rather appealing, “cheddar sausage, tangy corn-cheese sauce, chile-lime-dusted corn fritters, pickled Fresno Chiles and cilantro on a toasted potato bun.” Obviously, a lot is going on. It’s a cheese and corn heavy dish, so if you aren’t a fan of these, I would stay away. That’s not the only reason to stay away.
First, let us start with the sausage. It was undercooked, and the flavoring was strange. The sausage was loaded with cheese, but all the cheese was sitting at the bottom of the sausage. It lead to a very unpleasant taste and ruined the whole dish.
The cheese sauce was strange, as it was watery and did not compliment the rest of the dish. Plus, there were pieces of corn in it, which threw it off completely.
The best part of the plate was the chile-lime-dusted corn fritters. They had a tangy taste, but it did not match the rest of the meal. We thought the same way with the Fresno Chiles. The potato bun was soft and was a little denser than a regular hot dog bun. It tasted like ordinary bread to us.
The fruit that accompanied the sausage was two mandarin oranges, and that tasted like… oranges. A weird side for a cheesy “corn” dog.
Cheesy “Corn” Fries (Filmstrip fries topped with tangy corn-cheese sauce, chile-lime-dusted corn fritters, pickled Fresno Chiles and cilantro) – $8.99
These fries have a little bit more going for them. The Award Wieners “filmstrip fries” are a year-round offering. The chips were warm and had the right amount of saltiness. This dish tops these fries with the same tangy corn-sauce and chile-lime-dusted corn fritters from the last meal. Once again, the sauce was watery and tasted like nacho cheese with spices — not a fan. The corn fritters were a crunchy tangy snack, and we found ourselves just eating those off the top of the fries.
If you must try one of these two new additions to the menu, I recommend trying this one. You do not have to worry about the lousy sausage, and you get some pretty good fries if you can get over the cheese sauce. The cilantro added a nice touch, but did not do much for the meal.
Gingerbread Funnel Cake Fries (Churro funnel cake fries topped with crumbled gingerbread, caramel, icing, and whipped topping) – $8.99
Back for another year, the Gingerbread Funnel Cake Fries bring a delicious treat to Award Wieners again.
I haven’t had the normal variety of Funnel Cake Fries from Award Wieners, but if they are anything like these, I will have to.
It is what the name implies, Funnel Cake in the shape of fries, in this case with a pretty fantastic gingerbread flavoring. The presence of a sweet icing and whipped cream on top is perfection and the order size is quite large, which it should be at this price point.
I did have to wait about 5 minutes for them to be made, but that also meant they were as fresh and warm as could be.
I can not recommend these enough, please try them if you have the chance!
