The Spaceship Earth refurbishment was put on pause for the reopening of EPCOT, but during today’s EPCOT – The Magic of Possibility D23 presentation, it was revealed that Spaceship Earth will be receiving an enhanced lighting package as part of its overhaul.
According to Imagineer Zach Riddley, an enhanced lighting package will be installed for the exterior of Spaceship Earth, with custom programming that connects this icon of EPCOT to its surroundings, encapsulates the park’s transformation, and brings unique evening moments to EPCOT guests.
Concept art for the newly-redone entrance for the park hinted at the new lighting package, with a rainbow of color shining on the geodesic sphere of Spaceship Earth. The fountain will also have a new lighting package, with a beam of light shining from the middle of the lucite pylons.
The Spaceship Earth reimagining was scheduled to begin on May 26th, later delayed indefinitely due to the COVID-19 shutdown. We first announced the closure back in October 2018, which includes a new building for the exit of the attraction, and potentially a new name, as revealed during the 2019 D23 Expo: “Spaceship Earth: Our Shared Story.”
Are you looking forward to the reimagining of Spaceship Earth? Let us know in the comments.
I am ok with some additional lighting options. However, I hope it is not another projection mapping show.
It would be awesome if they used the shimmering projection effects that they used in World of Color and Mickey’s Mix Magic onto Spaceship Earth to give it a shimmering effect at night! Not projected images per se but colors and sparkling effts.
Absolutely not looking forward to the reimagined version. The last update of test track was hardly an improvement of the actual ride- the queue is more fun…
Personally, I am a fan of the nostalgic purple and yellow lighting color scheme for spaceship earth. I’d hate to see it changed too much, but ya know, Disney…
