CONCEPT ART: Magic Key Terrace at Disney California Adventure Being Reinvented Into ‘Club 33’-Style Lounge, Getting New Backstory

Work begins today on renovating the Magic Key Terrace in Disney California Adventure, which will have a new look and backstory.

The terrace will remain open during the renovation, which is expected to be completed in late spring. Some sections will be closed and capacity reduced during the refurbishment. The updated version of the terrace will be an exclusive space for Disneyland Magic Key holders similar to Club 33 or the 1901 Lounge. There will be new furniture, lighting fixtures, draperies, tile work, stained glass, and murals.

The beige plaster walls and hacienda architecture will stay, while splashes of blue, turquoise, and green are added. There will be a wall fountain, climbing vines, banana trees, and palm trees. Wrought iron lighting fixtures will be added as well as floor-to-ceiling drapes to soften the sound.

“When we started our Magic Key program, the park decided that it would be a really great thing to have a location for them that they could call their own, kind of like Club 33 has their own location,” Walt Disney Imagineer Kim Irvine told the Orange County Register. “Now the Magic Key members have the same thing which is really wonderful.”

The space will be expanded from the terrace onto the second floor of Golden Vine Winery, into the old Vineyard Room space, which will be a lounge.

“The location was just gorgeous, with the early California architecture and wide-open windows with great vistas out to the park below,” Irvine said. “But the upstairs was never really finished to a point where it had a good story with a compelling look to it. So, with a lot of research, we came up with the story of an old California hacienda that had all the beauty of heavy wooden beams, colorful Spanish tile, and terracotta floors and built on that.”

The new backstory places Magic Key Terrace as a hacienda recently purchased by a young couple who want to keep the location’s old charm and add some contemporary elements.

Leslee Turnball created a new mural for the wall of Magic Key Terrace. “She did this beautiful painting of an early California hacienda sitting on a big lake with swans and peacocks,” Irvine said. “It just sets the mood for where you are in this location. I’m so excited for the guests to see that because it is just really gorgeous.”

Two animal mascots will be incorporated into the new design: a proud peacock and Nutmeg the feral cat.

”We wanted to make sure it was a very special place for Magic Key members,” Irvine said. “We spent a lot of time on the detail, mood, environment, and energy of the place.”

In the covered lounge, there will be high-top tables at the windows for parade and nighttime spectacular viewing. Stained glass windows featuring the peacock will replace the current shutters. The uncovered terrace will have lounge chairs and coffee tables made of teak wood.

“It’s very much meant for sitting and chatting about your day, sharing photos, and really enjoying the space and not feeling rushed,” Irvine said.
