Colombian-style beef empanadas, served with aji verde and cabbage salad tossed with cilantro dressing and escabeche
This empanada is much thicker and heartier than we expected, as the pastry wrapping is made of masa, a corn flour that’s commonly found in tamales. That gives this empanada and some heft and serious weight.
The filling inside is fine. It’s not particularly delicious, but good enough to do its job. The seasoning seems almost like a generic taco mix, but that works well enough for the purpose. The cabbage slaw was great. It’s a nice replacement for coleslaw and helps to almost cleanse the palate from the heavy empanada.
Overall, we enjoyed this dish, though we would have liked it even more if there were two or three.
Mistletoe Mule – $16.00
A twist on a classic mule with cranberry juice and agave garnished with a sprig of rosemary and a cape cranberry
This is a variation on a traditional mule, bringing cranberry into the mix.
It’s very heavy on ginger from the ginger beer. The cranberry is still present, but it definitely takes a back seat to the ginger flavor.
If you’re a fan of mules, this one’s for you.
