REVIEW: Mexico at Universal’s Mardi Gras: International Flavors of Carnaval 2023

Cafe La Bamba at Universal Studios Florida recently reopened serving a lunch and dinner menu of tacos, burritos, and more, which we believe is the best counter-service food at Universal Orlando Resort! Now, the service window is opening as the Mexico booth for the 2023 Mardi Gras: International Flavors of Carnaval.

*NEW* Tacos Al Pastor – $8.99

The mango dipping sauce has a creeping and lingering heat. We love spicy but were not prepared.

This is a lip and tongue-tingling heat and it makes the whole taco.

You might not be able to taste much else besides the sauce, but this is a spicy, sweet, and savory dish that will leave you wanting more! This was another dish we couldn’t stop talking about the rest of the night.

*NEW* Baja Shrimp Ceviche Tostada – $9.99

marinated shrimp with avocado crema and a crispy blue corn tortilla

While the tostada of the first tacos dish a bit soggy, here it was fresh, with a nice lime taste.

It had a crispier bottom too. This would be a great dish on a hot dice and was one of our highlights from the festival too!

*NEW* Vegan Churros – $7.49

These are a great option, and we wouldn’t have known they were vegan if the sign didn’t explicitly say so.

They taste like smaller, fluffier cinnamon sugar churros and come with sides of thick, sweet coconut nectar and chocolate syrup.

The chocolate syrup is like Hershey’s, thin and runny, but it’s a classic choice.

The coconut nectar really tasted more like honey and had the same type of consistency. Both dips are amazing and the churros are actually better than the ones served at the stands around the park, so we highly recommend these.

Elotes – $7.99

char-grilled corn, jalapeño mayo, ancho chili powder, cotija cheese, cilantro

This whole booth is a win and the elotes are out of this world.

The corn is tender but not overly cooked, and is easy to bite and eat right off the cob. You don’t have to fight to pull the corn off.

The entire treat is evenly coated in toppings.

We can’t wait to order this one again! There was a long wait for the corn when we ordered and we’ve heard that the wait to get food from the Mexico booth has been very long. Plan to wait if you’re ordering here, but just know it will be worth it.

Grapefruit Paloma – $12 for 12 oz. single serve, $13.50 for 12 oz. souvenir cop, or $16.50 for 20 oz. souvenir cup

El Jimador tequila, grapefruit juice, lime juice, simple syrup, and a pinch of smoked sea salt, finished with Fresca soda

CafeLaBambaNewMenu2022 USF1

This tasted completely different than the grapefruit paloma served inside Cafe La Bamba. The tequila is heavy and there is a strong taste of sea salt, too. It tastes more like a margarita. It caught us off guard, but we highly recommend it.

Modelo Especial (ABV 4.6%) – $10.50

pilsner style lager, characterized by an orange blossom honey aroma with a hint of herb

Modelo Chelada Lime (ABV 3.5%) – $14

Modelo’s authentic Mexican beer with the flavors of lime and salt for a crisp and refreshing taste

Modelo Chelada Pineapple (ABV 3.5%) – $14

Modelo’s authentic Mexican beer with sweetness of pineapple and a dash of spice

Modelo Chelada (ABV 3.5%) – $14

a classic michelada-style beer with authentic flavors of tomato, salt, and lime

Overall, much like Cafe La Bamba itself, you really can’t miss with the food here! Universal’s Mardi Gras: International Flavors of Carnaval runs from February 4 through April 16.
