Deadline reported today that the series had been cancelled, although Disney did not release a statement explaining the move. Disney has cancelled multiple other series after one or two seasons, including “Big Shot,” “The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers,” “Mysterious Benedict Society,” “Diary of A Future President,” and “Turner & Hooch.”

The series is described as follows:

“Jess Valenzuela’s life is turned upside down when an enigmatic stranger gives her a clue to a centuries-old treasure that might be connected to her long-dead father. Jess has a knack for solving puzzles, and her skills are put to the test as she and her friends follow a series of clues hidden in American artifacts and landmarks. But can Jess outsmart a black-market antiquities dealer in a race to find history’s greatest lost treasure and unbury the truth about her family’s past?”

The Disney+ Original series, “National Treasure: Edge of History” is an expansion of the “National Treasure” movie franchise. Jerry Bruckheimer, Cormac & Marianne Wibberley, Jonathan Littman and KristieAnne Reed serve as executive producers on the series alongside Rick Muirragui, who also serves as a writer. Jon Turteltaub is also an executive producer. Mira Nair is directing and executive producing.

Ten episodes aired between December 2022 and January 2023, with negative reviews from critics but decent audience numbers. TV Time reported that the series stayed within the top 10 streamed series during its airing.

National Treasure Series

The “National Treasure” film series starred Nicolas Cage, Jon Voight, Diane Kruger, and Justin Bartha as Ben Gates, Abigail Chase, and Riley Poole respectively as they traveled the country in search of secret American treasures. The first film shows them in search of the treasures of the Knights Templar, whose map is hidden on the back of the Declaration of Independence. After his associate-turned-rival Ian Howe reveals his intent to steal the document and use the treasure for personal gain rather than preserve it in a national museum, Gates resolves to steal the Declaration of Independence himself and find the treasure before Ian, leading to a cat-and-mouse game with the FBI.

The second film, “National Treasure: Book of Secrets” sees Gates now wildly successful after finding the treasure, now seeking to restore his family’s honor after an ancestor is accused of plotting the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. In the process he kidnaps the President of the United States and seeks out his “book of secrets” to locate the lost city of gold — Cibola.

Both films were wildly successful, and rumors have swirled for years of a third film, but have yet to materialize.
