A new display is set up for Pride Month in one of the Emporium windows at Disneyland on Main Street, U.S.A.

New Pride Month Display in Emporium Window at Disneyland

The window we found in the Emporium shop is decorated with many bouquets of fake flowers, wicker furniture, and a lemonade drinkware set. The floral and avian wallpaper and variety of props, including a folding fan and a woman’s embroidery, are reminiscent of a Victorian-era picnic.

Violets or lavender were a common gift between women as a covert expression of sapphic interest in the 1800s. An example of this is found pinned to the fedora in the left of this image.

The framed photo on the right is “Lily Elsie and Adrienne Augarde” by Foulsham & Banfield, published by Rotary Photographic Co. Ltd in 1907.

A work-in-progress embroidery piece depicts a series of flowers and a Progress Pride flag with color gradients to show particular support for people of color and the trans communities. It also has the traditional LGBTQIA+ color gradation as well.

The novels stacked to the right are a series of titles written by our about historical men and women in the queer community.

• “Italian Garden: A Book of Songs” by A. Mary F. Robinson is a collection of poetry penned in the late 1800s.
• “Carmilla” by J. Sheridan Le Fanu is a story of a relationship between two women, one of whom is a vampire. This novel predates “Dracula” by 26 years.
• “The Picture of Dorian Gray” is written by Oscar Wilde, a famous LGBT+ author who wrote during the Victorian Romanic literary period.
• “Leaves of Grass,” a collection of poetry written by Walt Whitman.
• “Sappho: Memoir, Text, Selected Renderings and a Literal Translation Memoir, Text, Selected Renderings and a Literal Translation” by Henry Thornton Wharton. Sappho was an Archaic Greek poet from the island of Lesbos.
• “Letters from Laura and Eveline” by Justin O’Hearn was first published in 1883 and was marketed as an “appendix” to “The Sins of the Cities of the Plain.”

This painting is entitled “Sappho and Erinna in a Garden at Mytilene,” painted by Simeon Solomon in 1864.

Pride Month in Disneyland

Disney announced their first-ever Disneyland After Dark Pride Nite events on June 13 and June 15, 2023, during Pride Month.

Disneyland After Dark: Pride Nite is a separately ticketed event celebrating the LGBTQIA+ community and allies, and is sold out for both dates.

The after-hours event will include themed entertainment, Disney characters, one-of-a-kind photo opportunities, specialty menu items, and event merchandise. It will begin with a three-hour pre-party mix-in from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. PT. The park will then close and the private party will run from 9:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. PT.

At Disneyland Resort, a new popcorn bucket, mirrored sipper (shown above) and various treats will also be available.
