REVIEW: Lucky Fortune Cookery Serves New Karaage Chicken Sandwich, Yaki Udon Bowls, Baymax Macaron, and More in San Fransokyo Square

Lucky Fortune Cookery was the first venue to officially debut its San Fransokyo Square theming at Disney California Adventure. By August 31, all of Pacific Wharf will have transformed into the city from Marvel’s “Big Hero 6.”

Lucky Fortune Cookery

With so many new and returning items to discover, including the Baymax Macaron, we decided to try the menu out.

Entrées

*NEW* Karaage-inspired Crispy Chicken Sandwich – $14.99

with Slaw and Togarashi Mayonnaise on a Potato Bun, served with Garlic Chips

lucky fortune cookery food 7116

If you’re not in the mood for one of the bowls, this is the next best option. It is one of the better fried chicken sandwiches at any Disney Parks counter-service location on Earth. The chicken is a faithful re-creation of the Japanese dish (karaage). It’s perfectly fried with a sweet finish. The cutlets are juicy and thick.

lucky fortune cookery food 7118

The chicken is topped with a slightly spicy sauce and crunchy slaw. The potato bun is soft but still holds everything together, thankfully, because this has the potential to be a messy sandwich. The garlic chips are different from what you’ll find over at the Port of San Francisco Cervecería. These are more of an airy chip with a powdery garlic seasoning.

Teriyaki Chicken – $12.99

with Sautéed Vegetables and Steamed Rice

image 2 5

The Teriyaki Chicken is nice. It’s the safer option if you don’t like spice. The rice is well-cooked with all these dishes, and the plating is rather gorgeous for a counter service.

Beef Bulgogi Burrito – $13.99

with Seasoned Rice, Cabbage slaw and Garlic Chips

image 2 6

The Beef Bulgogi Wrap is huge and packed with sweet and tangy beef inside. It’s very good, and a great option if you don’t want chicken.

image 2 7

Do note that the garlic chips are quite good here, with a subtle garlic flavor.

*NEW* Yaki Udon with Karaage-inspired Crispy Chicken – $18.49

with Mushrooms, Sugar Snap Peas, Roasted Red Peppers, Bok Choy, Dark Soy and Hoisin Sauces

lucky fortune cookery food 7112

The fried chicken only enhances this dish, which is a faithful re-creation of the actual item we’ve had in Japan. It tastes like the real thing, which is the highest praise we could give an item.

lucky fortune cookery food 7138

It does have a slightly sweet finish. The chicken cutlet is thick, juicy, and perfectly fried. The oily, sauced-covered noodles soak up all the flavor. The mushrooms, bok choy, and snap peas are all great accompaniments to make this an excellent, filling counter-service dish.

*NEW* Beef Birria Ramen – $15.49

with Consomé, served with House-made Birria, Soft-boiled Egg, Monterey Jack, Cilantro, Roasted Corn, Onions and Radish

lucky fortune cookery food 7111

Over the last few days, we have read a number of very positive reviews of this dish. We did enjoy it but don’t think it is as good as people have claimed. If it were particularly spicy at one point, it isn’t anymore. In fact, we think it’s under-seasoned.

lucky fortune cookery food 7137

As far as the ingredients go, everything is cooked well. The beef has a stewed quality, though it absolutely melts in your mouth. It’s perfection. The noodles are perfectly cooked, too. They are the right type of pasta to pair with the beef. All of the vegetables are fresh. It’s a winning dish but just not spiced enough. Hopefully, Disney will go back and correct that.

Pork Wonton Nachos – $10.49

Hoisin-glazed Pork, Cheese Sauce, spicy Aïoli. Pickled Cabbage, Jalapeños, and Toasted Sesame Seeds

lucky fortune cookery food 7124

The quality of this old dish is below that of the newer items. This is the kind of minced pork we expect from fast food. It’s not bad, though it’s not high-quality meat.

lucky fortune cookery food 7139

The wonton chips are light and airy. They do manage to hold everything without breaking most of the time, which is good. The chips and the spicy sauce are the highlights of this.

Plant-based

*NEW* Yaki Udon – $13.49

with Mushrooms, Sugar Snap Peas, Roasted Red Peppers, Bok Choy, Dark Soy and Hoisin Sauces

lucky fortune cookery food 7114

Despite being on the oily side, this dish is absolutely fantastic. The udon is thick and heavy, so it soaks up all of that oil and the sauces. The mushrooms and veggies add a lot to the dish. The only thing we would complain about is that we didn’t get the bok choy in this one for some reason. It’s supposed to come with it, which you can see in our teriyaki chicken bowl. The bok choy would add a nice heavy crunch to this dish, but it was still great. We would highly recommend this and think it’s a viable vegan option for people traveling to Disney California Adventure.

Sides

Pot Stickers – $8.49

crispy Vegetable and Chicken Pot Stickers

image 2 8

The pot stickers are good, and we really enjoyed the dipping sauce. It tasted like soy sauce with a bit of green onion.

image 2 9

The pot stickers tasted like something you could buy at a store and fry at home, but that doesn’t make them bad.

image 2 10

They’re better than we would have expected from Disney.

Dessert

*NEW* Baymax Macaron – $6.99

filled with Chocolate-Hazelnut Spread and Buttercream

lucky fortune cookery food 7107

We have had macarons from nearly every Disney Park, including Disneyland Paris, where you might expect them to be spectacular. In some cases, they are, and in others, they’re terrible. What we have here in San Fransokyo Square is probably the best Disney macaron we’ve ever tried.

lucky fortune cookery food 7108

The cookie of the Baymax Macaron is exactly what you want: light, airy, soft. it crumbles the moment you bite into it. The chocolate hazelnut filling surrounded by sweet cream is a perfect flavor combination.

lucky fortune cookery food 7135

It’s nothing unique as far as ingredients, but it’s brilliant in its simplicity and everything you want a macaron to be. It’s also sizable for a macaron. We might even like this more than our favorite Halloween Cozy Cone Macaron.

Non-Alcoholic Beverages

*NEW* Lychee Tea – $6.99

Gold Peak® Unsweetened Black Tea, Premium Lychee Syrup with Lychee Coconut Jelly

lucky fortune cookery drinks 7129

You might expect the lychee tea to have boba at the bottom delivering coconut flavor — instead, it’s a drinkable black tea with a hint of sweetness from the coconut flavoring.

lucky fortune cookery drinks 7132

The problem really is that the jelly is not the consistency that jelly should be. In fact, it’s even sort of hard. It’s not mushy at all and was really off-putting.

lucky fortune cookery drinks 7134

If it wasn’t for the jelly, this would be fine, but ultimately we can’t recommend it.

Thai Tea – $6.99

with Sea Salt Cream and Brown Sugar Boba

DLR DCA Lucky Fortune Cookery Thai Tea 2

This is a drink we enjoy every time we have it. The Thai tea isn’t quite as strong and tannic as we would prefer, but it’s still strong enough to be enjoyable and for all the expected flavors to register.

DLR DCA Lucky Fortune Cookery Thai Tea 3

The sea salt cream gives the whole drink a lift and smoothness that more than compensates for any weakness of the tea.

DLR DCA Lucky Fortune Cookery Thai Tea 1

The brown sugar boba at the bottom are, as always, the perfect texture and delicious.

Hot Green Tea – $3.79

Organic Hot Green Tea

lucky fortune cookery drinks 7127

As you can see, the hot green tea is not anything special. It is literally a hot cup of water served with a Twinings jasmine green tea bag.

lucky fortune cookery drinks 7140

That being said, it is as good as any green tea we’ve ever had at a Japanese restaurant. So if you’re in the mood for such a thing, it will hit the spot.

lucky fortune cookery drinks 7141

Obviously, it is July when we are reviewing this, so we can’t exactly recommend drinking it this season. When the winter months come, though, this could be a pleasant drink to enjoy at Disney California Adventure.

Alcoholic Beverages

*NEW* Strawberry Lychee Cocktail – $16

Vodka, Lychee Liqueur, Premium Strawberry Syrup and Fresh Lemon Juice with sliced Strawberry Garnish

Strawberry Lychee Cocktail

This is particularly syrupy and overly sweet. It may please some that enjoy a lychee flavor but overall, we think it will be too sticky for most guests. It does have a strawberry-forward flavor followed by said sticky sweetness.

Bottle Logic Hanamachi (ABV: 5%) – $13

From TapHunter: “Super dry Japanese rice lager brewed with pilsner malt and flaked rice with Magnum and Sorachi Ace hops.”
