REVIEW: Spiced Chocolate Tart with BBQ Potato Chip Crust Debuts at Flavors from Fire for the 2023 EPCOT International Food & Wine Festival

Flavors from Fire is a marketplace booth, available during the EPCOT International Food & Wine Festival, that tends to come up with…creative dishes. Sometimes, they’re great! Sometimes, they’re a bit weird. This year, there’s a new addition of a Chimichurri Marinated Skirt Steak Taco, which sounds great, and a Spiced Chocolate Tart with BBQ Potato Chip Crust, which sounds a bit weird. Let’s dig in and see how they compare with the rest of the dishes.

*NEW* Chimichurri Marinated Skirt Steak Taco with Crushed Avocado, Grilled Corn Salsa, Pickled Red Onions, Queso Fresco and Cilantro-Lime Cream – $6.50

Right off the bat, we noticed that the meat is quite gummy. The shell is also chewy, yet somehow quite stale.

It’s definitely a dish that needs to be eaten immediately.

There’s a good array of flavors, but we wouldn’t get this again.

*NEW* Spiced Chocolate Tart with BBQ Potato Chip Crust, Salted Whisky-Caramel and Smoked Sea Salt – $4.75

This is a very dense cake. You need to like chocolate, but there are a ton of other flavors also going on in this dish. The cake itself has quite a fudgy texture and flavor. but as you continue to eat it, you get more flavors, like a saltiness, likely from the caramel.

The barbeque chips add a very interesting accent. We also liked the way the caramel sauce contrasts the smoky barbecue chip.

We would get this dish again, and would recommend it, but it’s not the most awesome dessert you’re going to eat. Still, it’s quite unique.

The Impossible™ Burger Slider with Wasabi Cream and Spicy Slaw on a Sesame Seed Bun – $6.00

Epcot Food and Wine 2018 Earth Eats

There’s a lot going on with this one. Those unaware of the recent infatuation with the Impossible Burger, let’s catch you up to speed. The company selling these burgers has made them entirely vegan, but they taste like meat, down to having the ‘bleeding’ effect that a medium-rare burger would have. Fortunately, this one is well-done and doesn’t have any juices flowing from it. The spicy slaw and wasabi cream on top adds a great kick to bring the stale burger to life.

Smoked Corned Beef with House-made Potato Chips, Cheese Curds, Pickled Onions and Beer-Cheese Fondue – $6.50

The beer cheese fondue carries a lot of the dish, but the rest of it isn’t as memorable.

When you get a chip with the pickled onion, the meat and the fondue, it does have a really good balance in terms of its flavor profile, having something salty with something a little bit sour, and an added crunch from the chip.

There are lots of different textures, but without the fondue, this dish wouldn’t be as great.

Saugatuck Brewing Company Bonfire Beer, Douglas, MI (5.5% ABV) – $5.50 for 6 oz., $9.50 for 12 oz.

Saugatuck Brewing Company describes their beer, also known as Bonfire Brown Ale: “This classic American Brown Ale is a perfect example of tradition; from its malty, rich body to the touch of light smoke in the finish.”

Four Virtues Bourbon Barrel Zinfandel, California ($18/bottle) – $6.50

Total Wine & More describes this wine: “Deliciously complex and silky smooth Lodi Zinfandel, featuring flavors of bright raspberry, cherry and juicy blackberry, framed by nuanced layers of caramel, vanilla and toasty oak.”

Swine Brine featuring Jim Beam Bourbon ($15/bottle) – $11.00

In 2017, this surprisingly good drink was made with Evan Williams bourbon. In recent years, they’ve switched to the more well-known Jim Beam bourbon, but no matter — it’s still good! The Swine Brine is definitely one of the most unique cocktails offered this year at the festival, and many were surprised at just how good (read: weird) this ended up being. It’s a combination of apple juice, lemon juice, bourbon, and mustard, which sounds pretty terrible. Needless to say, everyone in our group grimaced before they tried it, but they ended up enjoying it more than expected. WARNING: It may not be for everyone. Also, don’t dip the pork in.
