UPDATE: Disney Shares New Statement Regarding Potential Sale of ABC Network and TV Stations

The Walt Disney Company has issued a new statement in response to reports in the media regarding the sale of its ABC network and TV stations.

Disney Shares Statement on Sale of ABC Network

Bloomberg reported earlier today that Disney was having “exploratory talks” about selling ABC and its TV stations to Nexstar Media Group.

In its official statement, Disney said that the company has made “no decision” on divesting those properties, though they are “open to considering” options.

While we are open to considering a variety of strategic options for our linear businesses, at this time The Walt Disney Company has made no decision with respect to the divestiture of ABC or any other property and any report to that effect is unfounded.

Statement from The Walt Disney Company
Bob Iger on Squawk Box Disney

In an interview with David Faber on MSNBC’s “Squawk Box” back in July, Disney CEO Bob Iger agreed with Faber that ABC “may not be core” to The Walt Disney Company, and said that they have to be “open-minded” to potentially selling their TV assets — a comment which basically put them on the market.

It is also worth noting that the Public Relations department at Disney has a long history of attempting to cover things up that are in fact happening, such as when it was previously said that The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror would not be changed at Disney California Adventure. It was later announced at San Diego Comic Con in 2016 that the rumors were true, and the ride would be rethemed into Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT!

Disney’s stock prices hit a three-year low back in August 2023, and analysts have suggested breaking up the company is the best option to turn things around. Disney has also dodged persistent rumors that a sale of the company to Apple is being discussed, though Iger has refused to entertain the notion.
