Two of the three scare zones at Universal Studios Hollywood during Halloween Horror Nights this year are “Toyz” and “Ghostz.” These two zones are right next to each other, so we’ve included them both in one review.
Toyz is an amazing scare zone, exactly what we feel scare zones should be. Unlike many Universal Studios Florida scare zones, there are no vignettes with repetitive actions. There is also a lot of space, so the Scareactors have the freedom to be wild and crazy.
The toymaker roams around with a hammer. Some of the terrifying toys include a sailor, a ballerina, dolls, clowns, a teddy bear, a toy soldier on stilts, and a monkey with a mallet. Some would move low in the crowd and then pop up. They chased people out of the zone and then continued running behind them. They would stab at your stomach — not touching you but making you jump. There was a lot of energy from everyone.
The energy bled into the Ghostz section, which features a group of chainsaw-wielders in all white.
Another difference from Universal Studios Florida is that there aren’t a ton of sets. There was one toy shop set that was basically a display and not used by the actors. There were also two piles of toys, skeletons, and monsters at the base of a truss with fire effects. Still, this area outdoes Orlando when it comes to scares.
