‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians’ Renewed for Season 2 on Disney+

After a record-breaking Disney+ premiere, it’s no surprise that Disney has renewed “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” for a second season.

The first season was inspired by the first novel in the series by Rick Riordan, “The Lightning Thief.” Season two will be inspired by the second book, “The Sea of Monsters.” Riordan co-created the Disney+ series.

The series stars Walker Scobell as Percy Jackson, a young boy who learns that he’s the demigod son of Poseidon. Leah Sava Jeffries portrays his friend and daughter of Athena, Annabeth Chase. Aryan Simhadri rounds out the trio as Grover Underwood, Percy’s satyr protector.

The first season also featured Virginia Kull as Sally Jackson, Percy’s mother; Glynn Turman as Chiron a.k.a. Mr. Brunner; Jason Mantzoukas as Dionysus a.k.a. Mr. D; Megan Mullally as Alecto a.k.a. Mrs. Dodds; Charlie Bushnell as Luke Castellan, son of Hermes; Lin-Manuel Miranda as Hermes; and Toby Stephens as Poseidon.

Lance Reddick portrayed Zeus in the season one finale but passed away soon after filming concluded. The final episode was dedicated to him. Executive producers Jon Steinberg and Dan Shotz confirmed to Variety that they would find a replacement to portray Zeus in future seasons.

“Fortunately, we have a little bit of time,” Steinberg pointed out. “Even once the process gets started, we don’t see Zeus again for a little bit, so we’ll have a minute to try to find the right fit. It’s not ideal, but certainly, I think his mark on that role will be felt with whoever steps into his shoes.”

Shotz added, “What’s nice about [the season one finale] is that Lance Reddick will be immortalized as Zeus. Whatever takes place down the road, we can deal with.”

The rest of the cast is expected to return. A filming and release timeframe has not been confirmed.
