Development of the series, called “Noir,” has been public knowledge for a few months but Cage was not yet attached. It will debut domestically on MGM+’s linear channel and then globally on Prime Video.

Amazon MGM Studios head of TV Vernon Sanders said on Tuesday, “Expanding the Marvel universe with ‘Noir’ is a uniquely special opportunity and we are honored to bring this series to our global Prime Video customers. The extremely talented Nicolas Cage is an ideal choice for our new superhero and the accomplished producing team with Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, Amy Pascal, and the incredible team at Sony is dedicated to expanding this franchise in the most authentic way.”

According to the official logline, “Noir” will tell the story “of an aging and down on his luck private investigator (Cage) in 1930s New York, who is forced to grapple with his past life as the city’s one and only superhero.”

This alternate version of Peter Parker was first introduced in his own comic book series in 2009 as part of the Marvel Noir universe. Cage voiced Spider-Man Noir in “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” (2018).

“We are absolutely thrilled to have Nicolas Cage starring in this series! No one else could bring such pathos, pain, and heart to this singular character,” said Katherine Pope, president of Sony Pictures Television Studios. “Along with our brilliant producers and partners at Amazon MGM Studios and Prime Video, we couldn’t ask for a better team to explore this reimagining of such an iconic character in Sony’s Universe of Marvel Characters.”

Oren Uziel and Steve Lightfoot serve as co-showrunners and executive producers. They developed the series with “Into the Spider-Verse” producers Phil Lord, Christoper Miller, and Amy Pascal. Pascal is executive producing via Pascal Pictures while Lord and Miller are executive producing under a deal with Sony. Harry Bradbeer will also executive produce and direct the first two episodes.

This will be Cage’s first regular TV role after over four decades of acclaimed film work.

As announced in 2022, Amazon is also developing “Silk: Spider Society” with showrunner Angela Kang. Several other Sony-Marvel shows are reportedly in the works.
