Jaleel White, best known for his role as Steve Urkel on “Family Matters,” portrays the cyborg-esque Gunter, pictured second from the left in the photo above. On the left is Vane, portrayed by Marti Matulis. The pirate first appeared in “The Mandalorian” season 3. They’re joined by Brutus (voiced by Fred Tatasciore and played by performance artist Stephen Oyoung), Pax (performance artist Mike Estes), and Chaelt (Dale Soules).

One of the show’s creators, Christopher Ford, spoke with Entertainment Weekly and said the following regarding the show’s space pirates.

Pirates are talked about so much in ‘Star Wars.’ People would call Han Solo a pirate and he’d be like, ‘How dare you?’ And we’ve seen some awesome pirates in the animated shows. So this was something where both [executive producers] Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau were really excited to do more pirate stuff.

With the era we’re in, we’re kind of getting to play with that lawless thing. The Empire is gone, and so we’re playing with a part of the galaxy that has a resurgence of piracy.

Skeleton Crew” takes place around the same time as “The Mandalorian,” “The Book of Boba Fett,” and “Ahsoka.” The galaxy is still recovering after the fall of the Empire and the First Order has yet to take over.

Ford’s co-creator, Jon Watts said the following about the video-game inspiration for the space pirates.

I’m also a big fan of ‘Monkey Island.’ That’s also classic Lucas. So somewhere between ‘Star Wars’ pirates and ‘Monkey Island’ pirates. I think we found our sweet spot.

“Star Wars: Skeleton Crew” premieres with two episodes on Tuesday, December 3, 2024, on Disney+. Watch the trailer below.
