Another Round of Layoffs on the Way for The Walt Disney Company

Yet another round of layoffs is imminent for The Walt Disney Company, after just laying off “hundreds” of employees late last month.

More Layoffs at Disney

The Walt Disney Company is gearing up for another round of layoffs, specifically at ABC.

According to a new report from Variety, approximately 75 employees from Disney’s ABC News and local stations will be laid off as part of the ongoing reductions at the company “amid a difficult operating environment.” This follows approximately 300 corporate employees being laid off in late September, and a round of reductions at Disney Entertainment Television earlier this summer.

Employees were notified Wednesday of the layoffs, according to sources familiar with the situation. The number of jobs affected is believed to be split evenly between the national arm of ABC and the local media business. Disney’s ABC owns eight stations across major cities in the United States like New York and Los Angeles, and ABC News is the home of “Good Morning America” and “World News Tonight.”

Almin Karamehmedovic, president of ABC News, as well as Chad Matthews, president of ABC’s station group, shared their thoughts in notes to employees on Wednesday, October 2.

Across the various ranks of ABC News, a limited number of our colleagues are being impacted by staff reductions. As you know, this has been happening across the broader company and the industry at large in recent weeks and months.

For us, it means shaping a team that embraces the new media landscape and evolves along with it, which we must do to continue serving our viewers.

It’s no secret that our industry is undergoing a transformation unlike any other, and we’re seeing headlines every day about streamlining across every major media company.

While we’re not immune to the pressures facing this business today, we have been — and will continue to be — strategic with decisions about our organization’s future.

Chad Matthews, president of ABC’s station group, in a memo

Per Variety, none of the anchors assigned to ABC News’ most popular programming are expected to be affected at this time. Executives “believe the layoffs will not affect any national or local programming and no specific employee teams or groups are being eliminated as part of the downsizing.”

Earlier this year, Pixar laid off 14% of its workforce, and the Disney Store (formerly shopDisney) let go of 150 Cast Members. In 2023, The Walt Disney Company completed three rounds of layoffs to cut about $5.5 billion in costs. In total, about 7,000 employees were laid off over three months.
