Disney has announced that MuppetVision 3D will indeed close to make way for a Monsters Inc. land, but the company is looking to ensure the film is preserved.
Disney Exploring Ways to Preserve MuppetVision 3D
MuppetVision 3D opened at Disney’s Hollywood Studios on May 16, 1991. Being the final project Muppets creator Jim Henson worked on before has death, the show is of great historical significance and a beacon for Muppet fans everywhere.
With that in mind, Disney has said shared a quote offering insight into what they plan to do with the film once the venue closes to make way for a new theater show in Monstropolis:
As we move forward with these changes, we are having creative conversations and exploring ways to preserve the film and other parts of the experience for fans to enjoy in the future.
While Disney has already digitized the film (the digital version has been playing in the attraction for over a decade), it’s possible we could see the film added to Disney+.
However, the latter half of the quote, in which Disney references preserving “the film and other parts of the experience,” implies that the company is considering other options as well. Even still, this quote in no way guarantees that the show will ever been seen in an attraction setting again once it closes.
Disney has not confirmed anything beyond today’s news, including a closing date for the beloved attraction. Disney has also said that “a whole new theater show” will be present in the Monsters Inc. land, presumably taking over the current MuppetVision space. More details will be shared next year.
Though MuppetVision 3D will be going away, The Muppets will continue to have a presence at Disney’s Hollywood Studios with a retheme of Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster, taking over for Aerosmith. At the very least, Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy are expected to appear alongside Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem.

I still haven’t experienced MuppetVision 3D in person, but I believe it needs to live on in the parks. Just move it to another section.
Fewer and fewer favorites. Expensive trip to WDW becoming less justified.
I would like see Muppet Three D moved to a new location, perhaps where the laugh floor is in Magic Kingdom and move The Laugh Floor to Monsters Inc Land. I look forward to those fun muppets taking over Rockin Roller Coaster.
I am absolutely devastated by this. I am hoping they relocate this to preserve the legacy of Jim Henson’s last project!
