RUMOR: Disney Developing Mother Gothel Film

Disney is reportedly developing a film about Mother Gothel, the villain of “Tangled.”

Mother Gothel Film

In a scene reminiscent of a classic Disney film, an animated character with curly hair and a red dress, much like Mother Gothel's style, holds a basket and stands with arms outstretched in front of a wooden window inside a cozy room.

The news comes from entertainment scooper Daniel Richtman (@DanielRPK). We don’t know if the potential film would be a prequel or retelling of “Tangled,” or if it would be animated or would be live-action. It could be along the lines of “Maleficent,” which retells “Sleeping Beauty” with the evil fairy as a sympathetic protagonist. Or it could be like “Cruella,” which tells the villain’s origin story.

Following “Agatha All Along,” fans have suggested Kathryn Hahn play a live-action Mother Gothel. Entertainment Tonight asked the star about the possibility and she was excited about the idea but said, “I mean, I’m really good at karaoke… Singing next to Patti Lupone really humbles you.”

Gothel was voiced by Donna Murphy in “Tangled.” Murphy has reprised the role for other media, including in “Tangled: The Series,” which takes place after Gothel’s death but features her in flashbacks and nightmares.

It was recently announced a live-action “Tangled” remake is also in development. It’s to be directed by Michael Gracey (“The Greatest Showman”) from a screenplay by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (“Thor: Love and Thunder”).
