Disney confirmed via a Los Angeles Times story that the Hitchhiking Ghosts scene at the end of The Haunted Mansion at Disneyland has been updated.

Haunted Mansion Hitchhiking Ghost Scene Update

Two individuals are in a dark amusement park ride, sitting closely together and displaying expressions of surprise. The scene is dimly lit with a woven, circular frame partially visible in the foreground, suggesting the presence of hitchhiking ghosts adding to the eerie atmosphere.

The Haunted Mansion reopens on Saturday, January 18, with the most significant change being a brand new bride in the ride’s attic. There are also updates to the end of the attraction, though, with the LA Times stating “Imagery at ride’s end, in which a ‘ghost will follow you home,’ has also been updated.”

Disney and the LA Times did not clarify the exact updates but the ghosts have most likely been digitized. As previous rumors suggested, the Hitchhiking Ghosts will be projections instead of utilizing the old classic Pepper’s Ghost effect. The Magic Kingdom version of The Haunted Mansion replaced the Pepper’s Ghost effect with animations several years ago.

Of course, Pepper’s Ghost is still in use in the mansion’s famous ballroom scene.

The same report also confirmed and revealed the new Bride for the Mansion, who has a more lovelorn, sad backstory.

Stay tuned for our coverage of the ride’s reopening.
