Air Quality Meter Raises Questions About Sewage Odor at Universal Epic Universe

It seems Universal Orlando Resort may have introduced an air quality information feature to their app due to the location of Epic Universe.

Universal Epic Universe, set to open on May 22, is located just across the street from a sewage treatment plant. In the Google Maps screenshot above, Epic Universe is most of the center while the South Water Reclamation Facility is highlighted in the top right.

The issue was brought to WDWNT’s attention by Abdul Khan (@khan145527) on X. Khan said drivers on Sand Lake Road can smell the “stench” from the plant on days they release gas.

The new AQI (Air Quality Index) feature in the Universal Orlando Resort app is in the upper left corner of the map view. It displays an AQI reading at all times and clicking the icon will reveal more information from AirNow.

The AQI is displayed for all of Universal Orlando Resort, so it would make sense for the feature to also cover Epic Universe once it opens. It’s possible the theme park’s proximity to the sewage treatment plant is the reason for the app update.

AQI uses color-coded categories to communicate information about outdoor air quality. The higher the AQI value, the greater the level of air pollution and health concerns. AQI covers five major air pollutants regulated by the Clean Air Act: ground-level ozone, particle pollution, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen dioxide.
