“Moana 2” was originally created to be a TV series for Disney+ but was later reworked into a film for a theatrical release. This change made by Disney, from a TV series to a full-length film, was done to maximize revenue and profitability. This decision from Disney led to “Moana 2” making over $1 billion at the box office and becoming the third-highest-grossing movie in 2024.

David G. Derrick Jr., Jason Hand, and Dana Ledoux Miller directed the film. Music for “Moana 2” was written and composed by Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, replacing Lin-Manuel Miranda, who wrote and composed the music for the original film.

Returning from the original film are Auli’i Cravalho as the voice of Moana, and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as the voice of Maui.

The film picks up three years later, reuniting Moana and Maui for “an expansive new voyage alongside a crew of unlikely seafarers. After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced.”
