BREAKING: Disney & Pixar Announce Coco 2

During Thursday’s Annual Meeting of Shareholders webcast, Disney CEO Bob Iger announced a sequel to Pixar’s “Coco.”

Though the original announcement said the film would be released in 2029, that year has been removed from both the post on X and on The Walt Disney Company website (see the updated post below). It reunites the team behind the original film, including director Lee Unkrich and co-director Adrian Molina. Mark Nielsen will produce.

“While the film is just in the initial stages, we know it will be full of humor, heart, and adventure,” said Iger. “And we can’t wait to share more soon.”

“Coco” (2017) followed Miguel, a 12-year-old who dreamed of becoming a musician despite his family’s music ban. Miguel ventured into the Land of the Dead to learn more about his family history. “Coco” won the Academy Awards for Best Animated Feature Film and Best Original Song (“Remember Me”), as well as the Golden Globe for Best Animated Motion Picture, BAFTA for Best Animated Film, and Critics’ Choice awards for Best Animated Feature and Best Song.

The original film starred Anthony Gonzalez as Miguel, Gael García Bernal as Héctor, Benjamin Bratt as Ernesto de la Cruz, Alanna Ubach as Mamá Imelda, Renée Victor as Abuelita, and Ana Ofelia Murguía as Mamá Coco. No “Coco 2” cast has been confirmed.

The “Coco” screenplay was written by Molina and Matthew Aldrich, from a story by Unkrich, Molina, Aldrich, and Jason Katz.
