The Walt Disney Company Announces More Layoffs, Affecting News and Entertainment Networks

The Walt Disney Company is laying off another round of employees, according to a new report from Deadline.

Disney Layoffs Affecting News and Entertainment

According to the report, this layoff impacts just under 200 employees, or less than 6% in ABC News Group and Disney’s entertainment networks. The majority of those impacted will be at ABC News, with most of its workforce based in New York according to sources.

With the layoffs due to “organizational changes,” ABC News’ “longform units are being placed under one leadership structure, including ABC News Studios, 20/20 Nightline, and Impact x Nightline.” Good Morning America-branded shows, like GMA and GMA3, will be overseen together by Simone Swink; the shows previously operated separately. Digital and social media operations will be integrated with owned stations, news gathering, and shows.

ABC News will also eliminate 538, the data website that was purchased in 2018. Founder of the site Nate Silver was part of layoffs in 2023, but 538 was “repurposed” with G. Elliott Morris serving as director of data analytics.

Last October, approximately 75 employees were laid off from ABC News and local stations due to a “difficult operating environment.” That reduction followed a layoff of 300 corporate employees in September 2024, and a round of reductions at Disney Entertainment Television earlier that summer. Pixar Animation Studios also cut 14% of its workforce in May 2024 as part of Disney’s company-wide cost-cutting measures.
