Elizabeth Olsen admitted Marvel movies aren’t her taste although she’s “proud” of what she’s done with the character of Wanda Maximoff.

Elizabeth Olsen Says Marvel Movies Aren’t ‘The Art I Consume’

“I think I haven’t always successfully made choices in my work that are aligned with my personal taste, and that is something I feel like I’m still trying to prove when I meet people,” Olsen said on the new episode of Wild Card with Rachel Martin.

Olsen explained, “I have spent so many years doing Marvel that I feel like all the other jobs I have to do have to really reflect my personal taste because as much as I love being a part of this world — and I’m proud of what I’ve been able to do with the character — it’s not really the art that I consume. Which I have been very honest about.”

Olsen said she accepted the Marvel role because she thought the MCU was telling “such great Greek-type scale stories that reflected politics, culture in a really lovely way. And so I felt really proud to jump into it.” She added that within the past several years, it’s become a discussion point about “whether an actor says they want to, they would never do a Marvel movie or not.”

Olsen portrayed Wanda Maximoff, a.k.a. The Scarlet Witch, beginning with an uncredited cameo appearance in “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” (2014). She reprised the role in “Avengers: Age of Ultron” (2015), “Captain America: Civil War” (2016), “Avengers: Infinity War” (2018), and “Avengers: Endgame” (2019). She starred in “WandaVision” (2021) on Disney+. Her final on-screen appearance as Wanda (so far) was in “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” (2022). She also voiced versions of the character in the animated series “What If…?” and is set to voice her again in the spin-off “Marvel Zombies.”

Her non-Marvel films include “Martha Marcy May Marlene” (2011), “Kill Your Darlings” (2013), “Oldboy” (2013), “I Saw the Light” (2015), “His Three Daughters” (2023, also executive produced), and most recently “The Assessment” (2024). She starred in and executive produced the series “Sorry for Your Loss” alongside fellow Disney alum Kelly Marie Tran from 2018 to 2019. She will appear in the upcoming films “Eternity” and “Panic Carefully.”
