The first live-action remake of “How to Train Your Dragon” may not arrive in theaters until June 13, 2025, but Universal has already announced a sequel film, “How to Train Your Dragon 2.”

‘How to Train Your Dragon 2’ Surprise Announcement

During Universal Pictures’ panel at CinemaCon, which is currently taking place in Las Vegas, Universal surprised attendees by confirming a sequel to the live-action “How to Train Your Dragon.” The announcement sharing the news has already been posted on the Universal Pictures official X account.

The short, 13-second video clip only shows the ornate silver title for “How to Train Your Dragon 2” and confirms the film will be released in theaters on June 11, 2027.

The first live-action “How to Train Your Dragon” is set to be a remake of the animated film with the same name. Universal has not confirmed whether this second film will be a direct remake of the second animated movie, or any additional details for the sequel.

The first live-action movie stars Mason Thames as Hiccup, Nico Parker as Astrid, Nick Frost as Gobber, Julian Dennison, Gabriel Howell, Bronwyn James, Harry Trevaldwyn, Ruth Codd, Peter Serafinowicz, and Murray McArthur. Gerard Butler reprises his role from the animated film as Hiccup’s father, Chief Stoick the Vast. The movie is directed, penned, and produced by Dean DeBlois, who directed and wrote the original film as well. No official cast has been revealed for the sequel yet, but it is expected most of the main cast will reprise their roles.
