O’Brien will voice Smarty Pants. Disney announced the news during their Licensing Expo presentation but didn’t share any details. O’Brien described Smarty Pants as “the best character of them all” in an Instagram video.

“Isn’t that crazy?” O’Brien said about being cast. “Legendary franchise. These films are amazing. I can’t believe this!”

O’Brien explained that he first asked for the role of Woody but it was already promised to Tom Hanks. He then said he could be Buzz Lightyear but Tim Allen was already attached. “Guys,” O’Brien said, “you gotta think outside the box.”

However, O’Brien said he “far prefers” Smarty Pants and now wouldn’t play Woody or Buzz “even if they beg me.”

A child reads under a polka-dotted blanket in a dimly lit room, with various toy figures looking on from the foot of the bed, as if awaiting the next chapter of Toy Story 5.

“Toy Story 5” is scheduled for release on June 19, 2026. It’s written and directed by Andrew Stanton, who co-wrote all the other “Toy Story” films and directed “WALL-E” and “Finding Nemo.” It’s co-directed by McKenna Harris, produced by Jessica Choi, and executive produced by Pixar CCO Pete Docter.

The cast also includes Ernie Hudson, taking over as voice of Combat Carl from the late Carl Weathers, and Anna Faris in an undisclosed role.

The film sees the toys facing off against tech as kids embrace electronics.
