May 9, 2025, a.k.a. Kermit the Frog Day, marks the 70th anniversary of “Sam and Friends,” the original Muppets show that introduced Kermit.

Assembly Member Nick Schultz of California’s 44th Assembly District presented Kermit with a proclamation celebrating this “beloved and iconic character with audiences around the world, who have been educated, entertained, and touched by the unique and engaging personality Kermit presents to his innumerable fans.”

On this day in 1955, our trademark brand of gentle chaos first burst onto the scene thanks to our friends, Jim and Jane Henson. Yeah, it’s hard to believe that we’ve been singing and dancing and making people happy for that many years.

Kermit said he will celebrate his 70th birthday with the rest of the Muppets, going through photo albums and reminiscing. He called on everyone to celebrate by doing something nice like calling a friend. Kermit also encouraged everyone to wear green and share their looks using #TheMuppets70 and #KermittheFrogDay.

Speaking for all of the Muppets, I just want to say how much we appreciate the lovers, the dreamers, and all of the fans like you.
