Pixar’s Luxo Jr. comes to life in a new LEGO set featuring both the iconic lamp and the ball, now available for pre-order. The set originated as a LEGO Ideas set designed by fan Toby Brett.

Brett had the idea when watching the intro to Pixar’s “Coco.”

In just a ten-second clip, Luxo Jr. has such a curious and mischievous personality, and I thought this would be fun to translate into a LEGO set. I also remember looking through previous LEGO Ideas sets for inspiration and seeing the brilliant LEGO Ideas WALL-E set. I thought Luxo Jr. would make the perfect companion on the display shelf of Pixar fans!

Brett studied the original 1986 “Luxo Jr.” short film, studying the lamp’s movement. But the ball was the biggest challenge.

As all fan builders know, creating a sphere from rectangular-shaped bricks is very difficult. Originally, I struggled, and my prototypes were rather blocky, but after a lot of work, I ended up with something I was proud of.

Brett submitted the design via LEGO Ideas. It got the 10,000 votes required to become a real set, and Brett met with the LEGO Ideas team to refine the design. They ensured the lamp was posable and stable. The ball remained close to Brett’s submitted design with a new element to perfect the roundness.

The ball opens up to reveal Pixar Easter eggs referencing “Up,” “The Incredibles,” “Ratatouille,” “Monsters, Inc.”, “Toy Story,” and “Finding Nemo.”

When assembled, Luxo Jr. is about 11 inches tall, 5.5 inches wide, and 4 inches deep. It’s fully articulated. Two of the rounded plates of the ball can be removed so the lamp can be displayed atop, appearing to deflate the ball.

The set is 613 pieces and recommended for ages 18+. It’s available for pre-order now on LEGO.com and will ship from June 1, 2025.
