REVIEW: We Eat Captain Cacao at Moonship Chocolates and Celestial Sweets in Epic Universe

Katie Francis

We tried some of the unique, sugar-filled confections at Moonship Chocolates and Celestial Sweets in Epic Universe, including some shaped like the already-iconic Captain Cacao.

Location

Moonship Chocolates and Celestial Sweets is located in Celestial Park, across the path from the Atlantic restaurant. It is housed in the same building as Other Worlds Mercantile, and the two share a connected interior doorway.

Exterior

View through arched doors with a golden sign, revealing greenery and Moonship Chocolates’ whimsical glass structures outside.

The exterior of Moonship Chocolates matches the retro-futuristic, Victorian world’s fair aesthetic of Celestial Park. The entrance is marked with a glass-covered portico that holds a large hot air balloon statue in the air.

Interior

The inside of Moonship Chocolates is colored with rich shades of blue, gold, and pink. A display immediately inside the entryway shows another hot air balloon that, according to the shop’s lore, is filled with star-shaped marshmallows. The balloon, called the moonship, is piloted by young adventurer Maya of the Skies and her navigator, Captain Cacao. The interior is also directly connected to its neighboring store, Other Worlds Mercantile.

White Chocolate Cookie Crumbs Gourmet Pretzel – $6.00

A hand holds a white chocolate and cookie crumb-covered pretzel outside Burning Blade Tavern amid green foliage.

The size of this treat was much smaller than we expected for a $6 price point. The white chocolate on the exterior is nice but average.

The outer chocolate coating mixed with the Florida heat means it immediately starts melting on your fingers, plus the exterior of the pretzel itself starts getting a little moist. We still liked the flavors of this, and it makes for a fun snack, but the price makes it hard to really enjoy.

Moonlight Adventure Sugar Cookie – $6.50

A hand holds a round cookie with a hot air balloon and stars, inspired by Burning Blade Tavern, against a blue sky.

The front of this cookie includes a design of Captain Cacao on the moonship, as seen on much of the store’s merchandise, which makes this cookie very photogenic. The interior is a basic sugar cookie with no additional flavoring. It is a very dry, standard theme park sugar cookie with no real vanilla flavor present. It also isn’t very thick, so you don’t get a lot of cookie in each bite.

Captain Cacao Chocolate Sugar Cookie – $6.50

A hand holds a chocolate cookie shaped like a bear in a hat and sash, outdoors near Burning Blade Tavern in sunlight.

This cookie is slightly softer than the previous Moonlight Adventure cookie and not quite as dry, perhaps due to the added chocolate. It reminded us of a slightly dry brownie, and the chocolate flavor definitely comes through. That being said, it is still a thin theme park sugar cookie that isn’t worth rushing out to grab. We give it an extra point for the chocolate and the art of Captain Cacao, which is somehow even cuter in person.

Captain Cacao Blueberry Caramel Apple – $12.50

A hand holds a bear-shaped candy apple with a hat and feather, outside the Burning Blade Tavern among green foliage.

Forget the cookie, this is easily the cutest edible version of Captain Cacao. The whole thing is covered in blue food coloring, so expect your mouth and hands to be blue if you eat this outside. The outer coating of caramel is extremely thick, so much that our first bite didn’t actually include any apple.

This is very sweet, and could easily be a bit too much for one person without sharing. That being said, the apple is very fresh and juicy, so it didn’t feel like something made days ago that had been sitting in a cabinet. The outer caramel was sweet, and the blueberry added a unique twist to the standard caramel apple idea. The large size and extra-cute decorations also make this a much better value for the price.

Overall

We liked some of the treats in Moonship Chocolates and Celestial Sweets, but some of them look much better than they taste. Of course, there is a lot more available in the bakery cabinet than we were able to try in one sitting, but the snacks were mostly divided between things we liked and things we did not.

We do think there is a bit of a pricing issue with some of the smaller, single-person snacks being a bit expensive. However, we also can’t deny that several of the store-specific items are very cute. It’s not one of the strongest snack spots in Epic Universe, but it also isn’t the worst by a long way.
