BREAKING: Disney Vacation Club Seemingly Begins Crackdown on Members Frequently Renting Points

In an abrupt and unexpected update to the DVC terms and conditions, the Disney Vacation Club has made a change seemingly aimed at reducing the practice of renting points to other guests for profit.

Disney Vacation Club Confirming “For Personal Use”

As of June 2, 2025, DVC Members are being asked to confirm that reservations are “for personal use.” Online reservations have a checkbox to confirm, while Cast Members over the phone are asking members to tell them if the reservation is for a Member, friends and family, or a rental guest.

Further verbiage indicates that the crackdown is primarily aimed at members who are renting out their points as a business venture for profit. Renting points “regularly or frequently” is being framed as potential “commercial activity,” which is prohibited in the Disney Vacation Club Membership Agreements that all owners must sign. The updated terms and conditions state:

“You agree that any reservations made under your membership are solely for personal use and not for commercial purposes, as required by governing documents for each DVC Resort, including but not limited to the Declaration of Condominium and Membership Agreement. DVCM reserves the right to interpret personal use and determine if reservations are booked for personal or commercial purposes in its sole discretion.

Personal use may include enjoying the benefits of a DVC Membership with family or allowing use of any reserved Vacation Home to friends and family on occasion. Additionally, personal use means that the member does not regularly or frequently rent/sell reservations booked using their membership.”

It seems the key language here is that Disney Vacation Club is now explicitly defining “personal use” as not “regularly or frequently” renting reservations, and hence by deduction we can infer their definition of “commercial use.”

It is likely that the vast majority of Disney Vacation Club members and rental transactions are not the problem that DVC is trying to address. If you rent out a handful of points you aren’t going to use, or rent out a week-long reservation that you suddenly can’t utilize, you’re going to be fine. Regular DVC members who use their points like intended are not the target of this new policy.

Who This Disney Vacation Club Change is Targeting

Who is the target then? It appears that Disney Vacation Club wants to crack down on the person who owns 3000 points and books Christmas Week at every resort every year and sells these confirmed reservations to the highest bidder on eBay. It is this abnormal activity, wherein the member is never actually using any of their points for their own travel, that is hurting the ability of regular DVC members to obtain reservations for high-demand times of year.

In our analysis, this policy change, which appears to negatively impact DVC members’ ability to use their points as they wish, is actually a positive development for 99.9% of DVC members. This is simply a case of a few bad apples (people who own thousands of points and are making a business out of selling hard-to-get reservations) forcing DVC to clarify an existing policy to make the whole system more fair for regular members. If you’re in the 0.01% of DVC members who are the target of this change, I’m sure you already know that what you’re doing isn’t fair and hurts other members.
