Disney and Pixar announced “Incredibles 3” at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event last year, stating Bird was developing the story. Bird is still involved, writing the screenplay and producing alongside Dana Murray.

Sohn has worked on all of Bird’s animated films, including the “Incredibles” films and 1999’s “The Iron Giant,” except for this year’s “Ray Gunn.” Bird’s commitment to “Ray Gunn” — which he conceptualized in the ’90s — is what’s keeping him from directing “Incredibles 3.” “Ray Gunn” is in pre-production with Skydance Animation, headed by former Pixar chief John Lasseter.

Bird and Pixar’s Chief Creative Officer Pete Docter personally chose Sohn to take the reins on the new “Incredibles” flick. Bird has been a mentor to Sohn, whose directorial debut was Pixar’s “The Good Dinosaur” (2015). He returned to the directing chair for “Elemental” (2023), a personal story inspired by his childhood. It was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.

Sohn’s first work with Pixar was as a production artist and story artist on “Finding Nemo” (2003), and he’s now part of the studio’s senior creative team. He’s also lent his voice to various characters, most notably Emile in “Ratatouille,” Squishy in “Monsters University,” and Sox in “Lightyear.”

“The Incredibles” was released in 2004, followed by “Incredibles 2” in 2018. The first film won Best Animated Feature and Best Sound Editing at the Academy Awards, as well as the Annie Award for Best Animated Feature. It was the first entirely animated film to win the Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation. It grossed $632 million worldwide.

“Incredibles 2” grossed $1.243 billion. At the time, it was the fastest animated film to gross $1 billion and Pixar’s highest-grossing film.

Disney and Pixar have not announced any “Incredibles 3” plot details.
