Take home a piece of Disneyland history with a newly-released Bruce Bushman piece available at Disneyana.
Bruce Bushman Original Fantasyland Concept Art – $9,000
This is an original hand-colored brown line print by Bushman, a.k.a. “The Father of Fantasyland.” It comes framed with a golden plaque featuring Bushman’s name and details. The piece is not a perfect rectangle, with pieces of the paper cut away at the bottom.
It depicts circus tent-style structures and Dumbo the Flying Elephant. Note that the Dumbo vehicles are pink. Bushman originally conceived of the attraction being specifically based on the “Pink Elephants on Parade” sequence of “Dumbo” with all-pink elephant vehicles.
As the ride continued moving through development, Bushman designed the circus area around it, including Casey Jr. Circus Train, also visible in this art. On the right is a pirate ship in a lagoon. Disneyland once had a Captain Hook-themed pirate ship restaurant in a Fantasyland pond (eventually including Skull Rock), but it was removed in the 1980s to make way for New Fantasyland.
Other Bushman concept art released at Disneyana has also depicted Dumbo the Flying Elephant and the never-built “Duck Bumps” bumper car ride. Bushman first joined The Walt Disney Company in 1937 as a “Fantasia” animator. During the development of Disneyland Park, he worked closely with David Bradley to design Fantasyland.
