Several crew members were working on Big Thunder Mountain Railroad at Magic Kingdom on Monday as the ride’s year-long refurbishment continues.
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad Refurbishment
There’s now an envelope tester on the track behind the lift hill. This circular element is used to make sure there’s plenty of space around the ride vehicle. Disney has been using these and test vehicles since finishing the coaster’s new track a few weeks ago.
Crew members were working on the bridge and rockwork on the front of the mountain. The bridge was almost completely deconstructed and reconstructed around the new track. Three crew members were securing railings on the side of the bridge closest to Rivers of America.
Horizontal beams were recently installed on this side of the bridge directly next to the track. The railings are brand new as of this week.
Where the track curves into the mountain, a crew member was painting rockwork. There’s still a hole in the rockwork next to the track.
The crew member was refreshing the reddish-brown paint in areas where it has faded or worn away due to weather.
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad will reopen in 2025 with “a little bit of new magic.” Although there are still several months of construction to go, we soon won’t be able to see most of it as the Walt Disney World Railroad switches to shuttle mode and the Liberty Square Riverboat permanently closes.
