REVIEW: Feast Like a Viking at the Mead Hall in How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk at Epic Universe

Katie Francis

We tried some hearty platters fit for a Viking and all the other new menu items at the Mead Hall in How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk at Epic Universe.

Location

Map highlights attractions such as Viking Traders, Mead Hall, and Dragon Racer’s Rally in a themed amusement park area.

Mead Hall is in How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk, located across from the entrance to Fyre Drill.

Exterior

The Mead Hall is located at the base of a mountain spire that towers over Berk. At the peak is Gothi’s hut. A large viking sculpture sits on either side of the 16.5-foot-high entrance.

Interior

The inside appears to have been hewn from the mountain that houses it, with tall ceilings and carved wooden posts. The seating includes benches and chairs around the circular dining room. Large tapestries of the characters and dragons hang from the walls.

Entrée Reviews

Nordic Harvest Salad – $13

Kale, arugula, red cabbage, ancient grains, blueberries, radishes, apples, trail mix, and raspberry walnut vinaigrette ($20 with salmon)

It’s a large portion size. It’s light on the vinaigrette, and the raspberry is too subtle. The greens are very fresh and tasty. We had one singular blueberry in the entire bowl, though. It’s a little underdressed.

Berserker’s Meatballs – $17

Swedish meatballs, onion gravy, lingonberry jam, and smashed root vegetables

These are basically IKEA meatballs, down to the lingonberry. They’re very good and the jam adds a nice sweetness. The mashed root vegetables are very sweet and work well with the meatballs.

Gobber the Belch’s Turkey Wings – $20

Roasted turkey wings, herb garlic potatoes, roasted carrots, cipollini onions, and wild berry bbq sauce

These are enormous, much like the wings from the Goblin’s Feast booth from Halloween Horror Nights 33. The meat is dry on the edges, but the middle is much better. The cippolini onions are tender and flavorful.

This is a huge serving size for the price, but it’s difficult and messy to eat. The wild berry bbq sauce is used on several menu items, and it doesn’t work with most of them. It’s too sweet, throwing off the balance here.

The baked potato is slathered with garlic dill butter, elevating it from some of the other sides offered. If you’re not a dill fan, you may find it off-putting, but we loved it.

Thawfest Platter – $50

Wild berry bbq glazed chicken drumsticks, grilled salmon, sausage links, roasted carrots, cipollini onions, Nordic fries, and side sauces

These are very reminiscent of homemade sausage from a backyard grill. They’re good, but we’re glad we got them on the platter rather than from Hooligan’s Sausage Links because we wouldn’t want them as our main entrée.

The chicken is fine. The meat is tender and juicy, but it has a very generous amount of the wild berry bbq sauce that drowns it in sweetness.

The grilled salmon can also come in a sandwich or on a salad, but it’s by itself here with chimichurri on it. The fish is extremely dry. However, on another visit, the salmon on the platter was excellent, so there are some issues with consistency here. The chimichurri is strong with a nice kick.

For sides, the platter comes with a heaping pile of Nordic fries, the delicious cippolini onions, and a little dish of sweet pickles.

Overall, the value of this platter is not great. If the main items were something your family already wanted to try, this might work for you. Otherwise, there are much better quality options on the menu.

Valka’s Vegan Burger – $16.99

Ancient grains patty with mushrooms, leeks, smoked berry aioli, arugula, and pickled cucumbers on a pumpernickel kaiser bun; served with Nordic fries

It’s a little undercooked, but for a housemade vegan burger, this is really good. It reminded us of vegetarian “meat” before the Impossible trend took over, when it used to be more plant-forward. The texture is as if they blended the components into a paste before cooking it into a patty. You can taste the mushroom, but it’s not overpowering. We love a good pumpernickel, and this was a good one. The berry aioli works a lot better than the berry bbq sauce.

Sullen Sea Sandwich – $19

Salmon, pickled cucumbers, horseradish dill crème fraîche, pumpernickel kaiser bun, with ancient grains and sundried berries

This cut of salmon was tender and moist; nothing like the piece on the Thawfest Platter. You’d better really like dill to enjoy this sandwich (which we do).

The ancient grains are a great change of pace from the other sides. The berries work really well to create a complex profile with a great mouthfeel. It’s underseasoned, but still enjoyable.

Everything works together for a tasty, fresh dish.

Little Dragon Riders Reviews

Barf and Belch’s Duo Plate – $9.49

Mac & cheese bites, grilled sausage, carrots, Nordic fries, and grapes on the vine

The sausage has less seasoning than those on the platter. It tastes like a basic kielbasa. The mac and cheese bites are not good. They’re thin, leaving one layer of pasta and a glob of cheese. We’re not even sure a child would eat them.

Rating out of 7: 2

Nightlight’s Burger – $9.49

with carrots, Nordic fries, and grapes on the vine

This is a regular theme park children’s menu burger. It’s a bland patty with a cold piece of American cheese. You can get ketchup by request. It’s not bad, it’s fast-food quality. This is definitely the better kids’ meal option.

Dessert Review

Stormfly’s Catch of the Day – $7.99

Cereal crumble, chocolate mousse fish

It would be a basic and fairly unremarkable chocolate mousse, but the cute presentation elevates it. It’s decently sized for sharing, and likely to be a hit with most.

Rating out of 7: 6

Yaknog – $6.99

Malted chocolate and cinnamon drink with whipped topping

This is an upgraded chocolate milk. It’s just cinnamon and chocolate milk (though another reporter thought it tasted like they used Nesquick and water instead of milk). The main flavor profile is very cinnamon-forward, but the “barrel” cup is cute.

Specialty Beverage Review

Toothless Plasma Blast – $7

Powerade Mountain Berry Blast and stone fruit syrup

You can taste the stonefruit syrup, but this is basically just blue Powerade, which you can get from the Freestyle machines. However, kids will probably want the cup.

Draft Beer Review

Stoik’s Ale – $13

Wildflower honey white ale

You can taste the various notes well, but the mouthfeel is unsettling. The taste lingers on the tongue with a hint of smokiness.

Mead Review

Gobber’s Mead – $13

Boysenberry blackcurrant vanilla with Grains of Paradise infusion

We’re not mead drinkers, but this is so good. Its very juice-forward. The blackberry is wonderful.

Overall

The food at Mead Hall is middle-of-the-road. We’d come back for the mead and meatballs, and the two plant-based options are both solid. Plus, the interior of Mead Hall gorgeous and worth at least stopping in to see. That being said, there were some issues with food consistency, and it certainly isn’t the strongest dining location in Epic Universe.
