BREAKING: Tsunami Warning Issued for Tokyo Disney Resort & Universal Studios Japan, California Coast Under Watch

A tsunami warning has been issued for large areas of Japan, including Tokyo Disney Resort and Universal Studios Japan, while the coast of California is now under a tsunami watch.

An 8.7-magnitude earthquake that struck off the eastern coast of Russia has set off a string of tsunami warnings on July 29, 2025. The Japan Meteorological Agency has issued a tsunami warning for the Pacific Coast of Japan on the morning of Wednesday, July 30 (since it is already morning due to the time difference). As per The Japan News, “One-meter tsunami is expected to reach to Tokyo at 11:30 a.m., 3-meter tsunami to the Kujukuri area of Chiba Prefecture at 10:30 a.m. and 1-meter tsunami to Osaka Prefecture at 12 p.m.” Citizens in Japan have been sent emergency alerts asking them to evacuate from coastal regions and riverside areas.

The tsunami warning in Japan includes the Pacific coast from Hokkaido to Okinawa, which does include the area of both Tokyo Disneyland and Universal Studios Japan. It was upgraded from the lower-level advisory that was issued earlier in the day.

Meanwhile, a tsunami watch has now been issued for the Pacific coast of California. As per the Los Angeles Times, “the watch was in effect for the entire West Coast, including Washington and Oregon, as well as a portion of British Columbia and areas of South and Southeast Alaska.” This watch is very close to the Anaheim area where Disneyland Resort is located, though some of the most recent maps, such as the one pictured above from Fox 5 San Diego, show Anaheim as being just outside the watch area. Of course, this is subject to change as the situation continues to develop.

An estimated schedule posted by Fox Weather estimates the potential wave arrival in the San Francisco area taking place around 3:40 a.m. ET. The wave is estimated to hit the northern part of California first and not reach the southern coast until later.

Tsunami Alert Levels

Tsunami Warning chart shows four alert levels—Warning, Advisory, Watch, Info Statement—plus actions and hazards.

The watch issued on the coast of California is the lowest of the three tiers of tsunami alerts, as seen on the above weather.gov infographic. Japan had previously been under an advisory, which is the second tier, but it has since been upgraded to a full warning. A watch says that a “tsunami is possible” and people should “Be prepared to take action.” The highest warning tier states that a tsunami is “imminent,” and individuals should “Get to high ground or inland immediately.”
